S 2 A 106-107

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: If you oppose Muhammad here, then you will oppose the Lord of the worlds when [1] your records are made to speak with your deeds, and you will say, “The keepers wronged us; they wrote against us what we did not do.” Then He will call your bodily members to witness, and they will bear witness against you. They said, “Do not send your witness far away, for that is the act of liars. There is a long time between us and the Resurrection. Show us in ourselves what you claim so that we may know your truthfulness, and you will not do it because you are among the liars.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said to Ali (peace be upon him), “Call their bodily members to witness.” So Ali (peace be upon him) called them, and all of them testified against them that they did not wish that upon the nation of Muhammad, on the tongue of Muhammad, there should be sent down from your Lord a clear sign and a miraculous proof of his prophethood and the imamate of his brother Ali (peace be upon him), out of fear that his proof would dazzle them, that their commoners would believe in him, and that many of them would be thrown into confusion. They said, “O Muhammad, we do not hear this testimony which you claim our bodily members are testifying to.” He said, “O Ali, these are among those of whom Allah said: ‘Surely (as for) those against whom the word of your Lord has proved true, they will not believe. And though every sign should come to them...’ [2] Supplicate against them for destruction.” So Ali (peace be upon him) supplicated against them for destruction; then every bodily member that spoke with testimony against its owner split open [3] until he died on the spot. Another group of Jews who were present said, “How harsh you are, O Muhammad—you have killed them all!” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said, “I would not show gentleness to one upon whom the wrath of Allah, the Exalted, has intensified. Had they asked Allah, the Exalted, by Muhammad and Ali and their pure progeny to grant them respite and to restore them, He would have done so for them—just as He did for those before them among the worshipers of the calf when they asked Allah by Muhammad and Ali and their pure progeny—and Allah said to them on the tongue of Moses: had he supplicated thus on behalf of one who had already killed, Allah would have pardoned him from being killed, as an honor for Muhammad and Ali and their pure progeny.”

Quran 10:96-97 (M. H. Shakir): Surely those against whom the word of your Lord has proved true will not believe, though every sign should come to them, until they witness the painful chastisement.

99-/574 _2- Al-Hasan b. Abi al-Hasan al-Daylami—from one who narrated it—from his chain—from Abu Salih—from Hammad b. ‘Uthman—from Abu al-Hasan al-Rida, from his father Musa, from his father Ja‘far (blessings of Allah be upon them all), regarding His saying, “He specially chooses for His mercy whom He pleases.” He said: “Those singled out [4] for mercy are Allah’s Prophet, his legatee, and their progeny. Allah, the Exalted, created one hundred mercies. Ninety-nine mercies are with Him stored up for Muhammad and Ali and their progeny, and one mercy is spread over all other existents.”

Quran 2:106 (M. H. Shakir): Whatever communications We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things?

Quran 2:107 (M. H. Shakir): Do you not know that Allah’s is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and that besides Allah you have no guardian or helper?

99-/575 _1- Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Musa al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: ‘Whatever verse We abrogate, that is [1] We remove its ruling, or cause to be forgotten by removing its written form and removing the memory of it from hearts—and from your heart, O Muhammad—as Allah, the Exalted, said: ‘We will make you recite so you shall not forget, except what Allah pleases’ [2]—that He cause you to forget—so He removed the mention of it from your heart—we bring one better than it, meaning better for you [3]. This second one is greater for your rewards and more excellent for your welfare than the first abrogated verse; or one like it—like it in your welfare. That is, We do not abrogate or alter except that Our aim in that is your interests. Then He said: O Muhammad, ‘Do you not know that Allah has power over all things?’ For He is Powerful, able to abrogate and otherwise. ‘Do you not know that Allah’s is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth?’ He is the One who knows how to manage them and their interests, and He manages you with His knowledge. ‘And you have not besides Allah any guardian’ to take charge of your welfare, since the One who knows the interests is Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and none other; ‘nor any helper’—you have no helper to help you against something disliked if Allah wills to send it down upon you, or against a punishment if He wills to inflict it upon you. And Muhammad b. ‘Ali al-Baqir (peace be upon them) said: Perhaps Allah has decreed abrogation and sending down [4] for your interests and benefits, so that you may believe in them and your reward increase through affirming them. He does among that what contains your welfare and what is best for you. Then He said: ‘Do you not know that Allah’s is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth?’—so He owns them [5] by His power and directs their good [6] according to [7] His will; none can advance what He delays, nor delay what He advances. Then Allah, the Exalted, said: And what do you have, O assembly of Jews, deniers of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and rejecters of the abrogation of laws—besides Allah, other than Allah, the Exalted—of any guardian to take charge of your interests, if your Lord does not guide you to what is beneficial [8], nor any helper besides Allah to help you and ward off His punishment from you.’”

99-/576 _2- Al-‘Ayyashi—from Muhammad b. Muslim—from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “Whatever We abrogate of a verse or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it.” He said: “Al-nasikh (the abrogating) is what is altered/changed; and what He makes forgotten is like the unseen matter that has not yet come to be, as in His saying: ‘Allah makes to pass away what He pleases and establishes, and with Him is the Mother of the Book.’ [1]” He said: “Thus Allah does what He wills and changes what He wills—like the people of Yunus, when it appeared (otherwise) to Him, so He had mercy on them; and like His saying: ‘So turn away from them, for you are not to be blamed’ [2]—that is, His mercy overtook them [3].”

Quran 13:39 (M. H. Shakir): Allah makes to pass away and establishes what He pleases, and with Him is the basis of the Book.

Quran 51:54 (M. H. Shakir): So turn away from them, for you are not to be blamed.

99-/577 _3- From ‘Umar b. Yazid, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying, “Whatever We abrogate of a verse or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it.” He said: “They have lied; it is not so. If He abrogates it and brings one like it, then He has not abrogated it.” I said, “But this is how Allah said it!” He said, “This is not how the Blessed and Exalted said it.” I said, “Then how?” He said, “There is neither an alif nor a waw in it. He said: (Whatever We abrogate of an Imam or cause his mention to be forgotten, We bring better than him—from his loins—his like). He says: Whatever Imam I cause to die or cause his mention to be forgotten, We bring one better than him, like him, from his loins.”

99-/578 _4- The Shaykh in (al-Tahdhib), by his chain, from Yunus, from ‘Abd Allah b. Sinan, who said: Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Stoning is in the Qur’an in His, the Exalted’s, saying: ‘The old man and the old woman, if they commit fornication, then stone them absolutely, for they have satisfied their desire.’”

Quran 2:108 (M. H. Shakir): Or do you desire to question your Messenger as Moses was questioned aforetime? And whoever adopts unbelief instead of faith, he indeed has lost the right direction of the way.
