Tafsīr by Opinion

1. Tafsīr by Opinion:

The early Muslims in the era of the Companions (ṣaḥābah) and Followers (tābiʿīn) were very cautious and hesitant to interpret the Qur’an based on personal opinion. What is meant by opinion here is the praiseworthy type, not the blameworthy one, as defined by scholars of the Qur’an. They narrate from the Messenger of Allah صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله‌وسلم his severe condemnation of interpreting the Qur’an based on speculation:

“Whoever speaks about the Qur’an without knowledge, let him prepare his seat in the Fire.” [1]

And from Jundub, he said: The Messenger of Allah صلى‌الله‌عليه‌وآله‌وسلم said: “Whoever interprets the Qur’an according to his own opinion and is correct has still erred.” [2]

The Companions were extremely cautious—showing the utmost restraint—about saying anything regarding the Qur’an that they had not directly heard from the Messenger of Allah For example, ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿUmar used to say: “I met the jurists of Madinah, and indeed they held speech in tafsīr to be a grave matter.” [3]

Likewise, the Tābiʿūn (Followers) after them also refrained from interpreting the Qur’an based on personal opinion. Abū Wāʾil (Shaqīq ibn Salamah), whenever he was asked about something from the Qur’an, used to say: “Allah has indeed attained what He intended by it,” and he would refrain from giving an explanation based on his own view.

Saʿīd ibn Jubayr was once asked to interpret a verse of the Qur’an, and he replied: “For my sides to be cut apart is better than that.”

And al-Walīd ibn Muslim said: Ṭalq ibn Ḥabīb came to Jundub ibn ʿAbdullāh and asked him about a verse from the Qur’an. He replied: “I adjure you—if you are a Muslim—stand up and leave me.” [4]

Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, when asked about the interpretation of a verse of the Qur’an, used to say: “We do not say anything about the Qur’an.” [5]

And ʿAmr ibn Murrah said: A man asked Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib about a verse from the Qur’an, and he replied: “Do not ask me about the Qur’an. Ask the one who claims that nothing of it is hidden from him!”—meaning ʿIkrimah. [6]

Yazīd ibn Abī Yazīd said: “We used to ask Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib about what is ḥalāl and ḥarām, and he was the most knowledgeable of people. But when we asked him about a verse of the Qur’an, he would remain silent as if he had not heard.” [7]

And Hishām ibn ʿUrwah said: “I never heard my father interpret a single verse of the Book of Allah.” [8]

And Hushaym, from Mughīrah, from Ibrāhīm, said: “Our companions used to avoid tafsīr and were in awe of it.” [9]

Ibn ʿAbbās was the first to speak about the Qur’an through the lens of language. He would interpret verses of the Noble Qur’an based on his knowledge of Arabic language and poetry. He used to say: “If you ask me about the obscure (gharīb) words in the Qur’an, then seek them in poetry, for poetry is the register (dīwān) of the Arabs.” [1]

The questions of Nāfiʿ ibn al-Azraq posed to Ibn ʿAbbās regarding obscure words in the Qur’an—and the responses Ibn ʿAbbās gave by referencing Arab poetry—are well known, and are narrated by al-Suyūṭī in al-Itqān. [2]

Among the questions that were recorded from these exchanges is that Nāfiʿ ibn al-Azraq asked Ibn ʿAbbās about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

Slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep” [Qur’an 2:255, M.H. Shakir]

He asked: What is sina (slumber)?

Ibn ʿAbbās replied: “It is drowsiness (النعاس),” and he cited as evidence the verse of poetry by Zuhayr:

“No slumber seizes him throughout the long night, Nor does he sleep, nor is there error in his command.”【4】

However, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās, despite this, did not go beyond this limit of tafsīr based on language and the poetry of the Arabs. The companions, and after them the tābiʿūn (successors), and after them the scholars of the Qur’ān, continued until the middle of the fourth century AH adhering to the method of tafsīr by maʾthūr (transmitted narrations). Few deviated from this approach during that period, and the prevailing methodology in Qur’anic interpretation remained that of tafsīr by transmitted tradition.

In a later period, toward the end of the fourth century AH, scholars began to use reasoning (ra’y) in interpretation. Interpretations filled with personal reasoning began to emerge, and this rational approach continued to mature and develop up to the present time.

And these scholars hold that what Islam condemns in tafsīr bi‑al‑ra’y (interpretation by opinion) is the blameworthy opinion — that is, speaking about the Qur’ān without knowledge, guidance, or proof. As for speaking about the Qur’ān with knowledge, evidence, and clear proof, it is not blameworthy opinion; rather, it is praiseworthy opinion, and there is no harm in it.

Ibn Kathīr, at the beginning of his Tafsīr, after mentioning a group of reports about those who were cautious and apprehensive regarding interpretation by opinion, says:

“These authentic reports and what is similar to them from the leaders of the salaf are to be understood as referring to their caution in speaking about tafsīr in matters they had no knowledge of. As for one who speaks based on what he knows of the language and the Sharīʿah, there is no harm upon him. For this reason, it has been narrated from these same individuals and others statements in tafsīr, and there is no contradiction — for they spoke about what they knew and remained silent about what they did not know.” [5]

And al‑Bayhaqī said in Shuʿab al‑Īmān: “If this is authentic, then — and Allah knows best — what he meant was the opinion that prevails without any supporting evidence for it. Such an opinion is not permissible to use in giving rulings in legal cases, and likewise it is not permissible to interpret the Qur’ān with it. As for the opinion that is supported by proof, then giving rulings in legal matters with it is permissible.” [1]

In any case, tafsīr bi‑l‑raʾy — in the sound sense of raʾy — became active in the Islamic world from that time onward, with almost no objection from the majority of Muslim scholars. The movement of tafsīr bi‑l‑raʾy expanded, and nearly all Islamic intellectual schools contributed to it. The most prominent among these schools were: the Imāmiyyah, the Ashʿarīs, and the Muʿtazilah.

Shaykh al‑Ṭūsī, one of the most prominent jurists of the Imāmiyyah, authored Tafsīr al‑Tibyān in this approach. Fakhr al‑Dīn al‑Rāzī, from among the Ashʿarīs, authored al‑Tafsīr al‑Kabīr in this same approach. Likewise, al‑Zamakhsharī, from among the Muʿtazilah, authored Tafsīr al‑Kashshāf following the same approach.

Tafsīr bi‑l‑raʾy thus became accepted by all — but only when it is supported by definitive proof and evidence. As for opinion that is not backed by proof and relies merely on conjecture, it avails nothing of the truth.

Moreover, tafsīr bi‑l‑raʾy must not go beyond the bounds of the muḥkamāt (clear and decisive verses) of the Qur’an. As for the mutashābihāt (ambiguous verses), none knows them except Allah and those firmly rooted in knowledge. It is not valid for a mufassir to rely on his personal opinion in interpreting the mutashābihāt of the Qur’an. We are not, at present, in a position to go into detail and explanation of this point.
