99-/_2- Ibn Bābawayh said: Abu Muhammad Ja‘far ibn ‘Ali ibn Ahmad al-Faqih (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, saying: Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Sadaqah al-Qummi informed us, saying: Abu ‘Amr Muhammad ibn ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Ansari al-Kajjī narrated to me, saying: one who heard al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Nawfalī narrated to me, saying—in a long report—that Sulaiman al-Marwazī, the theologian of Khurasan, said to Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) regarding the Will (irada): “He has described Himself as being One Who wills (murīd).” Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “His describing Himself as ‘One Who wills’ is not an assertion that He is Will itself, nor an assertion that ‘Will’ is one of His Names.” Sulaiman said: “Because His Will is His Knowledge.” He (peace be upon him) said: “So when He knows a thing, has He then willed it?” Sulaiman said: “Yes.” He (peace be upon him) said: “Then when He does not will it, has He not known it?” Sulaiman said: “Yes.” He (peace be upon him) said: “On what basis did you say that, and what is the proof that His Will is His Knowledge? For He may know what He will never will; and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And if We pleased We would certainly take away that which We have revealed to you’—so He knows how to take it away, while He will never take it away.” [Qur’an 17:86; M. H. Shakir: “And if We pleased We would certainly take away that which We have revealed to you, then you would not find for it any protector against Us”]
The saying of the Exalted:
Except mercy from your Lord; surely His grace to you is abundant [17:87]
[Qur’an 17:87; M. H. Shakir: “Except mercy from your Lord; surely His grace to you is abundant.”]
_1- Al-Tabrisi in Majma‘ al-Bayan, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying, “Surely His grace to you is abundant”: He said, He means in that He made you the master of the children of Adam, sealed the prophets with you, and granted you the Praised Station.
