Al-Isra Ayah 60
Qur’an 17:59 (M. H. Shakir): And nothing could have hindered Us that We should send the signs except that the ancients rejected them; and We gave to Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they did her injustice; and We do not send the signs but to make men fear.
99-/6409 _1-
99-/6409 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His words: And nothing could have hindered Us that We should send the signs except that the ancients rejected them—this was revealed about Quraysh; and regarding His words: And We gave to Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they did her injustice; and We do not send the signs but to make men fear—this is coordinated with His saying: And nothing could have hindered Us that We should send the signs.
99-/6410 _2-
99-/6410 _2- He said: And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), about His words: And nothing could have hindered Us that We should send the signs: He said, “That was because Muhammad (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) was asked by his people to bring them a sign. So Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said: ‘Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: And nothing could have hindered Us that We should send the signs to your people except that the ancients rejected them; and whenever We sent a sign to a town and they did not believe in it, We destroyed them. For that reason, We delayed the signs from your people.’”
Qur’an 17:60 (M. H. Shakir): And when We said to you: Surely your Lord encompasses men; and We did not make the vision which We showed you but a trial for men and the cursed tree in the Quran as well; and We cause them to fear, but it only adds to their grievous transgression.
99-/6411 _3-
99-/6411 _3- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Hariz, from someone who heard, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “And We did not make the vision which We showed you but a trial for them so that they would wander blindly in it, and the cursed tree in the Quran—meaning the Banu Umayya.”
99-/6412 _4-
99-/6412 _4- ‘Ali ibn Sa‘id said: I was in Mecca when Ma‘ruf ibn Kharrabudh came to us, and he said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said to me: “Indeed ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said to ‘Umar: ‘O Abu Hafs, shall I not inform you of what was revealed regarding the Banu Umayya?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘It was revealed about them: and the cursed tree in the Quran.’ So ‘Umar became angry and said: ‘You lie! The Banu Umayya are better than you and more dutiful in maintaining kinship ties.’”
99-/6413 _5-
99-/6413 _5- From al-Halabi, from Zurara, and Humran, and Muhammad ibn Muslim: They said: We asked him about His words: And We did not make the vision which We showed you. He said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw that men would be upon the pulpits, turning the people back into misguidance: Zuraiq and Zufar.”
And as for His saying: and the cursed tree in the Quran, he said: “They are the Banu Umayya.”
99-/6414 _4-
99-/6414 _4- And in another narration from him (peace be upon him): “The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw men of fire upon pulpits of fire, driving the people back on their heels in retreat, and we do not name anyone.”
99-/6415 _5-
99-/6415 _5- And in the narration of Salam al-Ju‘fi from him (peace be upon him), he said: “We do not name the men by their names; but the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw a people upon his pulpit who would mislead the people after him away from the path, backward.”
99-/6416 _6-
99-/6416 _6- From al-Qasim ibn Sulayman, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “One morning the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) awoke bareheaded and sorrowful. It was said to him: ‘What is the matter with you, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘I saw last night the youths of Banu Umayya ascending this pulpit of mine. I said: My Lord, with me? He said: No, but after you.’”
99-/6417 _7-
99-/6417 _7- From Abu al-Tufayl, who said: I was in the mosque of Kufa and I heard ‘Ali (peace be upon him) saying—while he was on the pulpit—and Ibn al-Kawwa’ called out to him from the back of the mosque and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, inform me about the saying of Allah: and the cursed tree in the Quran.” He said: “The two most wicked men from Quraysh and from the Banu Umayya.”
99-/6418 _8-
99-/6418 _8- From ‘Abd al-Rahim al-Qasir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His words: And We did not make the vision which We showed you but a trial for men: He said: “He was shown men from Banu Taym and ‘Adi upon the pulpits, turning the people back from the path in retreat.” I said: And the cursed tree in the Quran? He said: “They are the Banu Umayya. Allah says: And We cause them to fear, but it only adds to their grievous transgression.”
99-/6419 _9-
99-/6419 _9- From Yunus, from ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Ashal, who said: I asked him about the saying of Allah: And We did not make the vision which We showed you but a trial for men—the verse. He said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) slept and saw that the Banu Umayya were ascending the pulpits, and every time one of them ascended, the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw humiliation and destitution, so he awoke alarmed at that. And those he saw were twelve men from the Banu Umayya. Gabriel then came to him with this verse, and Gabriel said: ‘The Banu Umayya will not possess anything but that the People of the House will possess twice its like.’”
99-/6420 _10-
99-/6420 _10- Al-Tabrisi: That was a vision the Prophet saw in his sleep—that apes were ascending his pulpit and descending; this distressed and grieved him. It was narrated by Sahl ibn Sa‘id from his father. Then he said: And this is what is narrated from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them both). And they said, according to this interpretation: The cursed tree in the Quran are the Banu Umayya.
99-/6421 _11-
99-/6421 _11- And in (Nahj al-Bayan): It has come in our reports, from Abu ‘Abdillah al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): “The Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw one night—while he was in Medina—as if fourteen apes had ascended his pulpit, one after another. When morning came, he related his vision to his companions, and they asked him about it. He said: ‘A group from Quraysh will ascend this pulpit of mine after me, though they are not worthy of it.’” Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “They are the Banu Umayya.”
/6422 _12-
99-/6422 _12- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: It was revealed when the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw in his sleep as if apes were ascending his pulpit, and that distressed him and grieved him greatly. So Allah revealed: “And We did not make the vision which We showed you but a trial for men that they might wander blindly in it, and the cursed tree in the Quran.” Thus it was revealed, and they are the Banu Umayya.
99-/6423 _13-
99-/6423 _13- And from the path of the opponents, al-Tha‘labī narrated in his (Tafsir), raising it to al-Rashid, from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab, regarding His saying, exalted is He: And We did not make the vision which We showed you but a trial for men—the verse. He said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw the Banu Umayya upon the pulpits, and that distressed him. It was said to him: It is the world [they are given it], so his grief was relieved by it—(We made it) only as a trial for men, a testing for the people.”
99-/6424 _14-
99-/6424 _14- And also in (Tafsir al-Tha‘labī), raising it to Sahl ibn Sa‘d, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) saw the Banu Umayya leaping upon his pulpit like the leaping of apes, and that distressed him; he never fully smiled thereafter until he died. Then this verse was revealed.”
99-/6425 _15-
99-/6425 _15- And in the book (Fadīlat al-Husayn wa Hikāyat Musībatihi wa Qatlihi), raising it to Abu Hurayra, who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: “I saw in sleep the Banu al-Hakam or the Banu al-‘As leaping upon my pulpit as the apes leap.” He awoke as one enraged, and the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) was never thereafter seen fully smiling until he died.
His saying, exalted is He:
And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam, they made obeisance but Iblis [—to His saying…]
