The Seven Talbiyahs as Responses to the Seven Appeals of that Noble One (a.s.)
The Seven Talbiyahs as Responses to the Seven Appeals of that Noble One (a.s.)
Indication
The third reason:
That the seven talbiyahs are responses to the seven appeals for help made by that noble one (a.s.) concerning specific matters, to which no one responded.
The first:
He appealed for water for his Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) and companions. [943]
The second:
He appealed for water for the women and children, saying that they had committed no sin and were not fighting against the enemy. [944]
The third:
He requested water for the nursing infant and said:
“Is there no one who will bring a drink of water for this child?”
Then he reduced his request to merely asking that they themselves give the child some water. [945]
The fourth:
He appealed to the entire army, saying:
“O followers of the family of Abu Sufyan! Direct your hostility toward me and leave my household alone.”
The fifth:
Again he appealed to the army, requesting that after killing him they delay the plundering of the tents for a short while, and then afterwards do whatever they wished. [946]
The sixth:
He made an appeal when he had fallen upon the ground and heard the accursed Shimr shouting:
“Bring fire so that I may burn the tents!”
The Imam (a.s.) cried out:
“O son of Dhu al-Jawshan! Are you seeking fire in order to burn my household?” [947]
The seventh:
In his final moments he appealed for a single drop of water.
Before that appeal was completed, they severed his blessed head. [948]
Since no one responded to the Imam (a.s.) in these seven appeals, it is fitting that his lovers and followers respond with seven repetitions of:
“Labbayk (Here I am at your service),”
corresponding to their number,
so that they may attain the reward of coming to the aid of that noble one (a.s.) in those circumstances, if they bring those scenes to mind within their hearts.
