و الحديث طويل،تقدم بطوله في قوله تعالى: وَ الْجَانَّ خَلَقْنٰاهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نٰارِ السَّمُومِ من سورة الحجر [3].

(Tuhfat al-Ikhwān): Through the isnād, from Abū Baṣīr, from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him), who said:

He was asked: Inform me about the creation of Ādam (peace be upon him), how did Allah, the Exalted, create him?

He said: “Indeed, when Allah, the Exalted, created the nār al-samūm (a fire that has no heat and no smoke), He created from it the jān. That is the meaning of His saying, ‘And the jān We created before from scorching fire’ [Al-Ḥijr 15:27]. And He named it mārīj. He created from it his mate and named her Mārīja. He then copulated with her, and she gave birth to the jān. Then the jān gave birth to a child and named him al-jinn, from whom the tribes of the jinn proliferated. From among them was Iblīs, the accursed. The jān used to beget males and females, and the jinn were likewise born as twins. They became ninety thousand males and females, and continued to increase until they numbered as many as the grains of sand.”

And the narration is long; it has previously been cited in full under the verse: “And the jān We created before from scorching fire” from Sūrat al-Ḥijr [15:27].
