And so that he would take the verses, and thus he would be the one who casts back the covenants and recites the verses.
And Gabriel said: O Muhammad, your Lord did not command you to hand them to Ali (peace be upon him) and to take them away from Abu Bakr out of forgetfulness or doubt, nor as a correction for an error on His own part; rather, He intended to make clear to the weak among the Muslims that the station that your brother Ali (peace be upon him) holds will not be held by anyone other than you, O Muhammad—and even if his rank is mighty in the eyes of these weak ones, his status would thus be known to them.
When Ali (peace be upon him) took the verses from his hand, Abu Bakr later met the Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) and said: May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah—did you command Ali to take these verses from my hand? The Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) said: No; rather, the Most High, the Most Great commanded me that none act on my behalf except one who is of me. As for you, Allah has compensated you with what He has charged you of His verses and obligated you of His obediences with lofty degrees and noble ranks. Indeed, if you persist in our allegiance and meet us on the plains of the Resurrection, faithful to the covenants and compacts we took from you, then you will be among the best of our Shi‘a and the noble ones of those who love us. At this Abu Bakr’s distress was relieved.
He said: So Ali (peace be upon him) carried out Allah’s command, casting back the covenants to the enemies of Allah, and the polytheists despaired of entering Allah’s sanctuary after that year. They were a great multitude; Allah enveloped him in His light and clothed him among them with awe and majesty, and they did not dare, under that, to show opposition or attempt any evil. And that is His saying: Wa man azlamu mimman mana‘a masājida Allāhi an yudhkara fīhā ismuhu [Qur’an 2:114].
Shakir: And who is more unjust than he who prevents (men) from the mosques of Allah, that His name should be remembered in them.
And they are the mosques of the elect of the believers in Mecca, when they were prevented from worshiping in them by forcing the Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) to leave Mecca and by striving for its ruin—the ruin of those mosques—so that they would not be maintained for the obedience of Allah. Allah, the Exalted, said: Ulā’ika mā kāna lahum an yadkhulūhā illā khā’ifīn … lahum fī al-dunyā khizyun wa lahum fī al-ākhirati ‘adhābun ‘aẓīm [Qur’an 2:114].
Shakir: … (as for) these, it was not proper for them that they should have entered them except in fear; they shall meet with disgrace in this world, and they shall have a grievous chastisement in the hereafter.
99-/585 _2- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi—on the meaning of the verse—from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “They are Quraysh, when they prevented the Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) from entering Mecca and the Sacred Mosque.”
Qur’an 2:115
Shakir: And Allah’s is the East and the West, therefore, whither you turn, thither is Allah’s purpose; surely Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.

99-/586 _1- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim: The Scholar (peace be upon him) said: “It was revealed about the supererogatory prayer; so perform it wherever you face if you are on a journey. As for the obligatory prayers, His saying ‘And wherever you are, turn your faces toward it’ [Qur’an 2:144] means the obligations—you must not perform them except toward the qibla.”
99-/587 _2- The Shaykh in (al-Tahdhib), with his chain from al-Husayn b. Sa‘id, from Muhammad b. al-Husayn, said: I wrote to the Righteous Servant (peace be upon him): A man prays on a cloudy day in an open land and does not know the qibla; he prays, and when he finishes his prayer, the sun appears and he realizes he had prayed not toward the qibla. Should he count his prayer, or repeat it? He wrote: “He should repeat it so long as the time has not passed. Has he not known that Allah says—and His word is the truth—‘So wherever you turn, there is the face of Allah’ [Qur’an 2:115, Shakir: And Allah’s is the East and the West, therefore, whither you turn, thither is Allah’s purpose; surely Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing].”

99-/588 _3- From him: with his chain from Ahmad b. al-Husayn, from ‘Ali b. Mahziyar, from Muhammad b. ‘Abdillah b. Marwan, who said: I saw Yunus at Mina asking Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about a man upon whom the obligatory prayer becomes due while he is inside the Ka‘ba, and he cannot exit the Ka‘ba. He said: “He should lie on his back and pray by gestures,” and he mentioned His saying, Exalted is He: “So wherever you turn, there is the face of Allah” [Qur’an 2:115, Shakir: And Allah’s is the East and the West, therefore, whither you turn, thither is Allah’s purpose; surely Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing].

Abi ‘Umayr, from Hammad, from al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about a man who recites a verse of prostration while on the back of his mount. He said: “He should prostrate wherever it has turned him, for the Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) used to pray upon his she-camel while facing Medina,” and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: “So wherever you turn, there is the face of Allah” [Qur’an 2:115, Shakir: And Allah’s is the East and the West, therefore, whither you turn, thither is Allah’s purpose; surely Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing].

99-/591 _6- He said: Zurara said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): Is prayer while traveling in a ship and in a litter the same? He said: “All supererogatory prayer is the same; you gesture wherever your mount or your ship turns. As for the obligatory prayer, you dismount from the litter to the ground, except out of fear; if you fear, then gesture. As for the ship, pray in it standing and face the qibla as best you can, for Noah (peace be upon him) prayed the obligatory prayer in it standing, facing the qibla, even while it was closed over them.” He said: And how did he know the qibla so as to face it while it was closed over them? He said: “Gabriel (peace be upon him) would set him aright toward it.” He said: I said: So do I face it at every takbir? He said: “As for the supererogatory prayer—no; you pronounce the takbir in the supererogatory prayer not facing the qibla: ‘Allahu akbar.’” Then he said: “All of that is qibla for the one praying supererogatory prayers, for He, Exalted is He, said: ‘So wherever you turn, there is the face of Allah; surely Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing’ [Qur’an 2:115, Shakir].”

Shakir: And they say: Allah has taken to Himself a son. Glory be to Him; rather, whatever is in the heavens and the earth is His; all are obedient to Him.
99-/593 _1- Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from Ahmad b. Mihran, from ‘Abd al-‘Azim b. ‘Abdillah al-Hasani, from ‘Ali b. Asbat, from Sulayman, the client of Tirbal, from Hisham al-Jawaliqi, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the phrase “Subhan Allah”—what does it mean? He said: “His exaltation (declaring Him transcendent).”
