S 55 Ayat 60

"Is the reward of goodness aught but goodness?"

99-/10349 – Ibn Bābawayh reported: Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī Mājīlawayh narrated from his uncle Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Qāsim, from Aḥmad ibn Abī ʿAbdillāh al-Barqī, from Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Barqī, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Jabalah, from Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmmār, from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbdillāh, from his father, from his grandfather al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon them), who said:

A group of Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and the most knowledgeable among them questioned him. He said: “Inform me of the explanation of: Subḥān Allāh, al-ḥamdu lillāh, lā ilāha illā Allāh, Allāhu Akbar.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) replied: “Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, knew that the children of Ādam would fabricate lies about Allah, so He said: ‘Subḥān Allāh’, as a declaration of His transcendence from what they say...”

99-/10349 – And as for His saying: “al-ḥamdu lillāh” (All praise is due to Allah), He knew that the servants would not be able to render due thanks for His blessings, so He praised Himself before the servants could praise Him. It is the first utterance. Were it not for this, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, would not have bestowed any blessing upon anyone.

And His saying: “lā ilāha illā Allāh” (There is no god but Allah) signifies His Oneness. Allah does not accept deeds except through it. It is the word of piety (kalimatu al-taqwā) by which Allah will weigh the scales (of deeds) on the Day of Judgment.

And as for His saying: “Allāhu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest), it is the highest of the words and the most beloved of them to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. It means: there is nothing greater than Allah. The prayer is not valid without it due to its great worth in the sight of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. And it is the Most Noble and Most Glorious Name.

99-/10349 – The Jew said: “You have spoken the truth, O Muḥammad. So what is the reward for one who says these phrases?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) replied: “When the servant says Subḥānallāh (Glory be to Allah), everything beneath the Throne glorifies along with him, and the one who says it is given ten times its likeness in reward. And when he says al-ḥamdu lillāh (All praise is due to Allah), Allah grants him the blessings of this world joined with the blessings of the Hereafter. And it is the word that the people of Paradise will say upon entering it, and all other speech that they used to say in the world will cease except for al-ḥamdu lillāh. And that is the meaning of His saying, the Mighty and Majestic:

“Their cry therein shall be: Glory to Thee, O Allah! and their greeting therein shall be: Peace. And the conclusion of their cry shall be: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”

99-/10349 – And as for His saying: “Lā ilāha illallāh” (There is no god but Allah) – its price is Paradise. And that is the meaning of His saying, the Mighty and Majestic:

“Is the reward of goodness aught but goodness?” He is saying: Is there any reward for one who says lā ilāha illallāh other than Paradise?

The Jew then said: “You have spoken the truth, O Muḥammad.”

And this was also narrated by Shaykh al-Mufīd in al-Ikhtiṣāṣ [6].
