Concerning the Special Characteristics of that Noble One (a.s.) in Relation to the Angels

Title Ten: Concerning the special characteristics of that Noble One (a.s.) that relate to the angels, and in it are several objectives.

Title Ten : Concerning the Special Characteristics of that Noble One (a.s.) in Relation to the Angels

Objective One: Concerning what Allah granted him from the angels, and it consists of three qualities:

First: The servants of that Noble One (a.s.) during his lifetime.

As it is narrated that Isrāfīl boasted to Jibrāʾīl, saying:

“I am the bearer of the Throne and the possessor of the Trumpet (soor), and I am the nearest of the angels to Allah.”

Then Jibrāʾīl said:

“I am the trustee of revelation (wahy), and the possessor of casting down (qazf), swallowing into the earth (khasf), the mighty cry (sayhah), and earthquakes (zalzalah).”

So they sought judgment before the Divine Court.

Then revelation came:

“Remain silent, for by My Might and Majesty, I have created those who are better than both of you.”

They said:

“How is that so, when You created us from the light of Your Majesty?”

Then they looked at the leg of the Throne and saw written:

“There is no god but Allah; Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), Ali (a.s.), Fatimah (a.s.), al-Hasan (a.s.), and al-Imam Husain (a.s.).”

Then they were ashamed.

Jibrāʾīl hastened and said:

“O Allah, I adjure You by their right, make me a servant to them.”

So his supplication was accepted, and he became their servant. [1280]

However, he had a special form of service to Imam Husain (a.s.).

He would rock his cradle, [1281] recite lullabies for him, and recite these verses:

“Indeed, in Paradise there is a river of milk

For Ali (a.s.), al-Zahrāʾ (a.s.), al-Imam Husain (a.s.), and al-Hasan (a.s.).

Everyone who loves them

Will enter Paradise without sorrow.”

And he would bring him fruits of Paradise, its ornaments and garments. [1282]

He would dye his clothing. [1283]

He would bring news of his future tragedy (taa'aziyyah) to his grandfather (s.a.w.a.).

At times he would bring his soil (turbah). [1284]

And after the passing of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), he did not descend except concerning matters related to that Noble One (a.s.).

As it is narrated from Imam al-Sajjād (a.s.) that when al-Imam Husain (a.s.) was martyred, they saw a man among the army who cried out loudly.

They said to him:

“What is the matter with you?”

He replied:

“How can I not cry out when the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) is standing, sometimes looking toward the earth and sometimes toward you? I fear that he may supplicate against the people of the earth, and I am among them, so I may perish with them.”

Then some of them became alert and reflective.

Imam al-Sajjād (a.s.) said:

“That man was Jibrāʾīl.

Had he been given permission, he would have uttered such a cry against them that all their souls would have departed from their bodies.

But they were granted respite.” [1285]

As for angels other than Jibrāʾīl, many servants and attendants were appointed for the affairs of that Noble One (a.s.).

Among them were those who brought his sacred soil to his grandfather (s.a.w.a.). [1286]

And those who came either to congratulate him or to offer condolences concerning him.

And others besides them, whose presence is understood from various narrations. [1287]

The second group: His helpers and supporters (ansaar) who descended on several occasions.
