There shall be no fear upon them, nor shall they grieve—and this is a refutation of those who deny reward and punishment after death.

99-/1981: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub—through his chain—from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from al-Harith ibn Muhammad ibn al-Nu‘man, from Burayd al-‘Ijli, said: I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And they rejoice on account of those who have not yet joined them from behind them, that there shall be no fear upon them, nor shall they grieve.” He said: By Allah, they are our Shia, when their souls arrive in Paradise and they receive honor from Allah, Mighty and Majestic. They come to know and are certain that they had been upon the truth and upon the religion of Allah—glorious is His remembrance—so they rejoice for those believers among their brothers who, being left behind them, have not yet joined them: “There shall be no fear upon them, nor shall they grieve.”

Quran 3:170 (M. H. Shakir): “They rejoice for the sake of those who, (being left) behind them, have not yet joined them, that they shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.”

99-/1982: From him—through his chain—he said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to Abu Bakr one day: “And do not reckon those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead; nay, they are alive and are provided sustenance from their Lord. And I bear witness that Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), died a martyr. By Allah, he will come to you, so be certain when he comes to you, for Satan does not assume his form.” Then ‘Ali (peace be upon him) took Abu Bakr by the hand and showed him the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family). He (the Prophet) said: “O Abu Bakr, have faith in ‘Ali and in eleven of his progeny; they are like me except for prophethood. And repent to Allah concerning what is in your hand, for you have no right to it.” He (the narrator) said: Then he went away, and he did not see him.

Quran 3:169 (M. H. Shakir): “And reckon not those who are killed in Allah’s way as dead; nay, they are alive and are provided sustenance from their Lord.”

99-/1983: Al-‘Ayyashi—from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and said: “I am eager and energetic for jihad in the way of Allah.” He said: “Then strive in the way of Allah; for if you are killed, you will be alive with Allah, provided sustenance; and if you die, then your reward has fallen due upon Allah; and if you return, you will return to Allah free of sins. This is the explanation of: ‘And do not reckon those who are killed in Allah’s way as dead.’”

Quran 3:169 (M. H. Shakir): “And reckon not those who are killed in Allah’s way as dead; nay, they are alive and are provided sustenance from their Lord.”

Quran 3:172-174 (M. H. Shakir):

3:172. Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after the wound had befallen them—for such of them as do good and guard (against evil) shall have a great reward.

3:173. Those to whom the people said: Surely men have gathered against you, therefore fear them; but this increased their faith, and they said: Allah is sufficient for us and most excellent is the Protector.

3:174. So they returned with favor from Allah and (His) grace; no evil touched them; and they followed the pleasure of Allah; and Allah is the Lord of mighty grace.

…Rāfi‘—that it was revealed about ‘Ali (peace be upon him). This was because on the second day of Uhud, he called out among the Muslims and they answered him; and ‘Ali (peace be upon him) advanced with the banner of the Emigrants with seventy men until he reached Hamra’ al-Asad to terrify the enemy—it is a market three miles from Madinah—then he returned to Madinah on Friday. Abu Sufyan went on until he reached al-Rawha’, where he met Ma‘bad al-Khuza‘i, and said, “What news do you have?” So he recited to him:

“My mount was nearly shaken down by the sounds,

When the earth flooded with the sleek chargers in droves,

Casting down [1] by lions noble, not sluggards,

At the encounter, nor clumsy, nor idle.”

Then Abu Sufyan said to a caravan from ‘Abd al-Qays: “Convey to Muhammad that I have slain your chiefs, and I intended to return to uproot you all.” So the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “Allah is sufficient for us, and most excellent is the Disposer of affairs.” Abu Rafi‘ said: ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said that; then the verse was revealed: “Those to whom the people said…” [i.e., 3:173].

99-/1985: And Ibn Shahrāshūb also mentioned: It has been related from Abu Rafi‘ through many routes that when the polytheists withdrew on the Day of Uhud and reached al-Rawha’, they said: “You did not bring back the maidens on your mounts, nor did you kill Muhammad. Return!” This reached the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), so he sent in their tracks ‘Ali (peace be upon him) with a group of the Khazraj. The polytheists would not depart from a place except that ‘Ali (peace be upon him) would encamp there, so Allah Most High revealed: “Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after the wound had befallen them.” [Quran 3:172, M. H. Shakir]

و

And in the report of Abu Rafi‘: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) spat upon his wounds and supplicated for him, and sent him after the polytheists; so the verse was revealed about him.

99-/1986: And it is related via the route of the majority that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) dispatched ‘Ali (peace be upon him) with a group in pursuit of Abu Sufyan. A bedouin from Khuza‘ah met him and said to him: “Surely the people have gathered against you, so fear them”—meaning Abu Sufyan and his companions. But they—meaning ‘Ali and his companions—said: “Allah is sufficient for us, and most excellent is the Disposer of affairs,” so this verse was revealed up to His saying: “Lord of mighty grace.” [Quran 3:173-174, M. H. Shakir]

99-/1987: Al-‘Ayyashi—from Salim ibn Abi Maryam, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said to me: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sent ‘Ali (peace be upon him) with ten [men]. ‘Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after the wound had befallen them … a great reward’—it was indeed revealed about ‘Ali (peace be upon him).”

Quran 3:172 (M. H. Shakir): “Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after the wound had befallen them—for such of them as do good and guard (against evil) shall have a great reward.”

99-/1988: From Jabir, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ali (peace be upon them), who said: When the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) dispatched the Commander—

…of the Believers (peace be upon him) and ‘Ammar ibn Yasir to the people of Mecca, they said: “He has sent this youth! If only he had sent someone else to the people of Mecca—while in Mecca are the chiefs and men of Quraysh! By Allah, unbelief is better for us than what we are in!” They went on, and they said this to the two of them, frightening them with the people of Mecca and making the matter severe upon them. So ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said: “Allah is sufficient for us, and most excellent is the Disposer of affairs.” They proceeded, and when they entered Mecca, Allah informed His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) of what they had said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and of what ‘Ali (peace be upon him) had said to them. Then Allah revealed them by name in His Book—and that is His saying: “Those to whom the people said: Surely men have gathered against you, therefore fear them; but it increased them in faith, and they said: Allah is sufficient for us and most excellent is the Protector. So they returned with favor from Allah and (His) grace; no evil touched them; and they followed the pleasure of Allah; and Allah is the Lord of mighty grace.” And it was revealed as: “Have you not seen So-and-so and So-and-so who met ‘Ali and ‘Ammar and said: ‘Abu Sufyan and ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amir and the people of Mecca have gathered against you, so fear them’?” But it increased them in faith, and they said: “Allah is sufficient for us and most excellent is the Disposer of affairs.”

Quran 3:173-174 (M. H. Shakir):

99-/1989: Al-‘Ayyashi—from Muhammad ibn Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: I said to him: “Tell me about the unbeliever: Is death better for him or life?” He said: “Death is better for both the believer and the unbeliever.” I said: “And why is that?” He said: “Because Allah says: ‘And what is with Allah is better for the righteous’ [1], and He says: ‘And let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is good for their souls; We grant them respite only that they may add to their sins; and they shall have a disgraceful chastisement.’”

Quran 3:198 (M. H. Shakir): “But as to those who are careful of (their duty to) their Lord, they shall have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding in them; an entertainment from their Lord; and that which is with Allah is best for the righteous.”

Quran 3:178 (M. H. Shakir): “And let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is good for their souls; We grant them respite only that they may add to their sins; and they shall have a disgraceful chastisement.”

99-/1990: From Yunus, raised [to the Imam], who said: I said to him: “Did the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) marry his daughter to So-and-so?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “Then how did he marry him the other one?” He said: “He did indeed; so Allah revealed: ‘And let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is good for their souls … to a disgraceful chastisement.’”

Quran 3:178 (M. H. Shakir): “And let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is good for their souls; We grant them respite only that they may add to their sins; and they shall have a disgraceful chastisement.”

His saying, exalted is He:

“Mā kāna Allāhu li-yadhara al-mu’minīna ‘alā mā antum ‘alayhi ḥattā yamīza al-khabītha mina aṭ-ṭayyib.” [179]

Quran 3:179 (M. H. Shakir): “Allah was not going to leave the believers in the state in which you are until He separates the evil from the good; nor was Allah going to make you acquainted with the unseen, but Allah chooses of His messengers whom He pleases; therefore believe in Allah and His messengers; and if you believe and guard (against evil), then you shall have a great reward.”
