Al-Isra Ayah 85

He sees his evil deeds, so his color changes on account of that, his joints tremble, and his soul is alarmed. Then he sees his good deeds, so his eye is soothed, his soul is gladdened, and his spirit rejoices. Then he looks at what Allah has granted him of reward, and his joy intensifies. Then Allah says to the angels: Bring the scrolls in which are the deeds they did not perform. He said: They read them, then they say: By Your might, You surely know that we did not do any of these. He says: You have spoken the truth; you intended them, so We wrote them for you. Then they are rewarded for them.

99-/6540 _4- The Shaykh in (al-Tahdhib), through his chain from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from Fadalah, from Hammad al-Nabi, from al-Hakam ibn al-Hakam, said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), when he was asked about praying in synagogues and churches. He said: Pray in them. I have seen them, and how clean they are! I said: Should I pray in them even if they are praying in them? He said: Yes. Do you not recite the Quran: Say: Everyone acts according to his manner; but your Lord best knows who is best guided in the way. Pray toward the Qiblah and leave them. (Quran 17:84, Shakir: Say: Everyone acts according to his manner; but your Lord best knows who is best guided in the way.) [1] In the source: A’ yusalli. [2] In “S” and the source: wa gharbahum.

99-/6541 _5- Al-‘Ayyashi, from Hammad, from Salih ibn al-Hakam, said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), when he was asked about praying in synagogues and churches. He said: Pray in them, for I have seen them and how clean they are! He said: So I said: Shall I pray in them even if they are praying in them? He said: Pray in them even if they are praying in them. Do you not recite the Quran: Say: Everyone acts according to his manner; but your Lord best knows who is best guided in the way. Pray toward the Qiblah and leave them. (Quran 17:84, Shakir: Say: Everyone acts according to his manner; but your Lord best knows who is best guided in the way.)

99-/6542 _6- From Abu Hashim, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about eternity in the Garden and the Fire. He said: The people of the Fire were made to abide in the Fire only because their intentions in the world were that if they were to be made to abide therein, they would disobey Allah forever; and the people of the Garden were made to abide in the Garden only because their intentions in the world were that if they were to remain, they would obey Allah forever. So by intentions these and those were made to abide. Then he recited His saying: Say: Everyone acts according to his manner, and said: According to his intention. (Quran 17:84, Shakir: Say: Everyone acts according to his manner; but your Lord best knows who is best guided in the way.)

Quran 17:85 (M. H. Shakir): And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is one of the commands of my Lord, and you are not given any knowledge but a little.

Say: The soul is one of the commands of my Lord. He said: A creation greater than Jabra’il (peace be upon him) and Mika’il; it was with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), and it is with the Imams, and it is from the malakut (the dominion).

99-/6544 _2- And from him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz, from Abu Basir, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say, regarding They ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is one of the commands of my Lord: A creation greater than Jabra’il and Mika’il. It was not with anyone among those who have passed except Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and it is with the Imams (peace be upon them), guiding them aright; and it is not found whenever it is sought.

99-/6545 _3- And from him, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from ‘Ali ibn Asbat, from al-Husayn ibn Abi al-‘Ala’, from Sa‘d al-Iskaf, who said: A man came to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) asking him about the Spirit—Is it not Jabra’il? The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to him: Jabra’il (peace be upon him) is one of the angels, and the Spirit is other than Jabra’il. He kept repeating that to the man, so the man said to him: You have said something tremendous; no one claims that the Spirit is other than Jabra’il. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to him: You are astray; you transmit from the people of error. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says to His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): The command of Allah came, so do not seek to hasten it. Glory be to Him, and exalted is He above what they associate. He sends down the angels with the Spirit—and the Spirit is other than the angels. (Quran 16:1-2, Shakir: The command of Allah has come, therefore do not desire to hasten it; glory be to Him and highly exalted be He above what they associate (with Him). He sends down the angels with the inspiration by His command on whom He pleases of His servants, saying: Give the warning that there is no god but Me, therefore be careful of (your duty to) Me.)

Say: The soul is one of the commands of my Lord. He said: A creation greater than Jabra’il and Mika’il; it was not with anyone among those who have passed except Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and it is with the Imams (peace be upon them), granting them success and guiding them aright; and it is not that whenever one seeks it, he finds it. 99-/6549 _7- From Zurara and Humran, from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them both), regarding His saying: They ask you about the soul. They said: Verily Allah, Blessed and Exalted, is One, the Self-Sufficient. And “al-Samad” is that which has no interior. The Spirit is only a creation from His creation; it has sight, strength, and support, which He places in the hearts of the messengers and the believers.

99-/6552 _10- From Abu Basir, from one of the two (peace be upon them), who said: I asked him about His saying: And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is one of the commands of my Lord. What is the soul? He said: That which is in animals and people. I said: And what is it? He said: It is from the malakut, from the power.

99-/6554 _12- From Asbat ibn Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: A creation greater than Jabra’il and Mika’il is with the Imams, granting them understanding, and it is from the malakut.

Quran 17:88 (M. H. Shakir): Say: If men and jinn should combine together to bring the like of this Quran, they could not bring the like of it, though some of them were aiders of others.
