Translation: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah: From Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Abi al-Khattab, from Musa ibn Sa‘dan, from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Qasim al-Hadrami, from ‘Abd al-Karim ibn ‘Amr al-Khath‘ami, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Iblis said: ‘Respite me till the day when they are raised.’ But Allah refused that for him, and said: ‘So surely you are of the respited ones till the period of the time made known.’ When the Day of the Appointed Time occurs, Iblis—may Allah curse him—will appear with all his followers from the time Allah created Adam (peace be upon him) until the Day of the Appointed Time; and that will be the last return (karra) in which the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) returns.” I said: “Will there indeed be returns?” He said: “Yes, there will indeed be returns and returns. There is no Imam in an age except that he returns in his age, and with him the righteous and the wicked return in his era, until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, grants victory to the believer over the unbeliever. When the Day of the Appointed Time occurs, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) will return with his companions, and Iblis will come with his companions; their appointed place will be in a land of the lands of the Euphrates called al-Rawha’, near your Kufa. They will fight a battle the like of which has never been fought since Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created the worlds. It is as if I see the companions of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) retreating backward one hundred steps, and as if I see some of their feet having fallen into the Euphrates. At that time the All-Compeller [1], Mighty and Majestic, descends in canopies of cloud, and the angels, and the matter is decreed [2], while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is before Him, in his hand a spear of light. When Iblis looks at him, he retreats backwards, turning on his heels. His companions say to him…”

At that time Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will be worshiped and none will be associated with Him, and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) will rule for forty-one thousand years—until a man from the Shi‘a of ‘Ali (peace be upon him) fathers a thousand male children from his own loins, one male each year. Then the two dark-green gardens will appear by the Mosque of Kufa and its surroundings, as Allah wills.”

Translation: From Wahb ibn Jumaī‘, the client of Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the words of Iblis: “My Lord, respite me till the day when they are raised.” “He said: So surely you are of the respited ones till the period of the time made known.” Wahb said to him: “May I be your ransom, which day is it?” He said: “O Wahb, do you think it is the day on which Allah will raise the people? Rather, Allah granted him respite until the day on which He will raise our Qa’im. When Allah raises our Qa’im, he will be in the Mosque of Kufa, and Iblis will come until he kneels before him on his knees and will say: ‘Woe to him because of this day!’ Then he (the Qa’im) will take him by his forelock and strike his neck. That day is the Appointed Time.”

Translation: Al-Tabrisi in al-Ihtijaj: From the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)—in a long narration—in which he said: “Whoever surrenders affairs to their Owner does not show arrogance toward His command, as Iblis was arrogant about prostrating to Adam (peace be upon him). And most nations showed arrogance toward obeying their prophets; so monotheism did not benefit them, just as that lengthy prostration did not benefit Iblis, for he performed one prostration for four thousand years, without intending by it anything other than the adornment of the world and securing the granting of respite. Therefore, prayer and fasting [2] do not benefit except along with guidance to the path of salvation and the way of truth. And Allah has cut off the excuse of His servants by clarifying His signs and sending His messengers, so that there may not be for people any argument against Allah after the messengers; and He has not left His earth without a scholar whom the creation needs, and a learner upon the path of salvation—those are the few in number.”
