Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) said, regarding His saying: “and He will not look upon them on the Day of Resurrection”: It means He will not look upon them with good, that is, He will not have mercy on them. The Arabs say to a nobleman or a king, “Do not look upon us,” meaning “You will not bring us any good.” Such is the “look” from Allah to His creation.

And most surely there is a party of them who distort the Book with their tongues, that you may consider it to be (a part) of the Book, while it is not (a part) of the Book; and they say, It is from Allah, while it is not from Allah; and they forge a lie against Allah whilst they know. (M. H. Shakir)

It is not meet for a mortal that Allah should give him the Book and the wisdom and the prophecy, then he should say to men: Be my servants rather than Allah's; but rather (he would say): Be godly because you teach the Book and because you study (it). (M. H. Shakir)

99-/1762

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His saying: “And surely there is a party of them who distort the Book with their tongues … and they say: It is from Allah”: The Jews used to say something that was not in the Torah and then say, “It is in the Torah,” so Allah declared them liars.

99-/1763

And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His saying: “It is not meet for a mortal that Allah should give him the Book and the wisdom and the prophecy, then he should say to men: Be my servants rather than Allah’s; but rather (he would say): Be godly”: Jesus did not say to the people, “I created you, so be servants to me instead of Allah.” Rather, he said to them, “Be godly,” meaning learned.

And he would not enjoin you that you should take the angels and the prophets for lords; what! would he enjoin you with unbelief after you are Muslims? (M. H. Shakir)

99-/1764

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Some people used to worship the angels; a group among the Christians claimed that Jesus (peace be upon him) is a lord; and the Jews said, “Ezra is the son of Allah.” So Allah said: “And he would not enjoin you that you should take the angels and the prophets for lords.”

And when Allah made a covenant through the prophets: Certainly what I have given you of Book and wisdom—then a Messenger comes to you verifying that which is with you, you must believe in him, and you must aid him. He said: Do you affirm and accept My compact in this (matter)? They said: We do affirm. He said: Then bear witness, and I (too) am of the bearers of witness with you. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/1765

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Allah took the covenant of His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) upon the prophets that they would believe in him, support him, and inform their nations of his news.

And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Ibn Maskan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Allah has not sent any prophet from Adam (peace be upon him) onward except that he will return to this world and support the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). This is His saying: ‘You must believe in him’—meaning the Messenger of Allah—and ‘you must aid him’—meaning the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). Then He said to them in the primordial state: ‘Do you affirm, and accept My obligation upon that—i.e., My covenant?’ They said, ‘We affirm.’ Allah said to the angels: ‘So bear witness, and I (too) am with you among the witnesses.’” And this, together with the verse in Surat al-Ahzab in His saying: “And when We made a covenant with the prophets, and with you, and with Nuh” [1] the verse; and the verse in Surat al-A‘raf in His saying: “And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their loins, their offspring” [2]—these three verses have been written in three surahs.

Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdillah—from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from ‘Abdullah ibn Maskan, from Fayd ibn Abi Shaybah—said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say, and he recited this verse: “And when Allah took the covenant of the prophets …”: “You shall surely believe in the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), and you shall surely support ‘Ali, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).” He said: “Yes, by Allah, from the time of Adam onward. Allah did not send any prophet or messenger except that He returned them all to the world until they fight before ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).”
