99-/1857 - al-‘Ayyāshī: From al-Husayn b. Khālid, who said: Abū al-Hasan the First (peace be upon him) said: “How do you recite this verse: O you who believe! be careful of (your duty to) Allah with the care which is due to Him and do not die unless you are Muslims—what?” I said: “Muslimūn (Muslims).” He said: “Glory be to Allah! He confers faith upon them and calls them believers, then He asks them for Islam, while faith is above Islam!” I said: “This is how it is read in the reading of Zayd.” He said: “Rather, in the reading of ‘Alī (peace be upon him)—and this is the revelation Jibrīl sent down to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family)—it is: ‘except while you are submitters (musallimūn) to the Messenger of Allah, then to the Imam after him.’”
99-/1858 - From Abū Basīr, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: Be careful of (your duty to) Allah with the care which is due to Him (Quran 3:102). He said: “He is obeyed and not disobeyed, remembered and not forgotten, and thanked and not denied.”
99-/1859 - From Abū Basīr, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: Be careful of (your duty to) Allah with the care which is due to Him (Quran 3:102). He said: “It is abrogated.” I said: “What abrogated it?” He said: “Allah’s saying: So be careful of (your duty to) Allah as much as you can [1] (Quran 64:16, M. H. Shakir).”
99-/1860 - Abū ‘Alī al-Tabrisī, regarding the verse: There is a difference of opinion about it on two views: one is that it is abrogated by His saying, Exalted is He: So be careful of (your duty to) Allah as much as you can [2] (Quran 64:16, M. H. Shakir). He said: And this is narrated from Abū Ja‘far and Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon them). The other is that it is not abrogated, as held by Ibn ‘Abbās and Tāwūs.
Quran 3:103 (M. H. Shakir): And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited, and remember the favor of Allah on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became brethren; and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it, thus does Allah make clear to you His communications that you may follow the right way.
1861 _1- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, on His saying, And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together: He said: “Tawhīd and wilayah (allegiance to the Imams).”

99-/1862 - Muhammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Nu‘mānī—known as Ibn Zaynab—said: Muhammad b. ‘Abdillāh b. Mu‘ammar al-Tabarānī narrated to us at Tiberias in the year 333, and this man was loyal to Yazīd b. Mu‘āwiya and among the nussāb. He said: My father narrated to us, he said: ‘Alī b. Hāshim and al-Hasan [1] b. al-Sakan narrated to us. He said: ‘Abd al-Razzāq b. Hammām narrated to us. He said: My father informed me, from Mīnā’ [2], the client of ‘Abd al-Rahmān b. ‘Awf, from Jābir b. ‘Abdillāh al-Ansārī, who said: The people of Yemen came as a delegation to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family). The Prophet said: “Your people of Yemen have come, urging on their riding beasts quickly” [3]. When they entered upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), he said: “A people tender of heart, firm in faith. Among them is the one who is given victory, who will go forth with seventy thousand, aiding my successor and the successor of my legatee; the straps of their swords are of musk” [4]. They said: “O Messenger of Allah, who is your legatee?” He said: “He is the one whom Allah commanded you to hold fast to, as the Mighty and Majestic said: And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited (Quran 3:103, M. H. Shakir).” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, clarify for us what this ‘rope’ is.” He said: “It is Allah’s saying: Except by a covenant from Allah and a covenant from men [5] (Quran 3:112, M. H. Shakir). The rope from Allah is His Book, and the rope from men is my legatee.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, and who is your legatee?” He said: “He is the one about whom Allah sent down: Lest a soul should say: O woe to me! for what I fell short of my duty to Allah [6] (Quran 39:56, M. H. Shakir).” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is this ‘side of Allah’?” He said: “He is the one about whom Allah says: And on the day when the unjust one shall bite his hands saying: O! would that I had taken a way with the Messenger [7] (Quran 25:27, M. H. Shakir). He is my legatee and the way to me after me.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, by Him Who sent you with the truth as a prophet, show him to us, for we long for him.” He said: “He is the one whom Allah made a sign for the perceiving believers [8]. If you look at him with the gaze of one who has a heart or gives ear while being present, you will know that he is my legatee just as you knew I am your prophet. So weave through the rows and examine the faces; the one toward whom your hearts incline—that is he. For Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says in His Book: Therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them [9]—towards him and his progeny.” Then he said: Abū ‘Āmir al-Ash‘arī stood among the Ash‘arīs, Abū Ghurrat al-Khawlānī among the Khawlānīs, and Zabyān and ‘Uthmān b. Qays…

Zayd b. ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Tamīmī, from al-Hasan b. al-Ḥusayn al-Anṣārī, from Muhammad b. al-Ḥusayn, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was one day sitting in the mosque with his companions, and said: ‘A man from the people of Paradise will come in through this door, asking about what concerns him.’ Then a man of tall stature, resembling the men of Muḍar, came in. He advanced, greeted the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), and sat. He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I heard Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say in what He sent down: And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited (Quran 3:103, M. H. Shakir). What is this rope by which Allah commanded us to hold fast and not to separate from?’ The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) lowered his head for a while, then raised it and gestured with his hand toward ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) and said: ‘This is Allah’s rope: whoever holds fast to it is protected by it in his world and does not go astray by it in his Hereafter.’ The man leapt to ‘Alī (peace be upon him), embraced him from behind his back, saying: ‘I have held fast to Allah’s rope and the rope of His Messenger,’ then he rose, turned away, and left. A man from the people stood and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall I catch up with him and ask him to seek forgiveness from Allah for me?’ The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘Then you will find him granted success.’ He caught up with the man and asked him to seek forgiveness for him. The man said to him: ‘Did you understand what the Messenger of Allah said to me and what I said to him?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘If you are holding fast to that rope, Allah will forgive you, and if not, Allah will not forgive you.’”

Muhammad b. ‘Ammār [2] narrated to me; he said: Abū Mūsā ‘Īsā al-Ḍarīr al-Bajalī narrated to us, from Abū al-Hasan (peace be upon him), in a sermon that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) delivered during his illness; in the report: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘Call for me my uncle—meaning al-‘Abbās (may Allah have mercy on him).’ He was called for; he and ‘Alī (peace be upon him) carried him until they brought him out; he led the people in prayer while he was seated, then he was carried and placed upon the pulpit afterward. All the people of Madīnah from the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār gathered, even the maidens [3] came out of their chambers; some were weeping, crying aloud, saying “We belong to Allah and to Him we return,” and some [were mute with grief] [4], and the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) would speak for a while and fall silent for a while. Among what he mentioned in his sermon was that he said: ‘O assembly of Muhājirūn and Anṣār, and whoever among humans and jinn is present on this, my day and this, my hour—let those present convey to those absent. Indeed, I leave among you the Book of Allah in which is light and guidance, and clarification of whatever Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has made obligatory; it is Allah’s proof over you, and my proof, and the proof of my walī. And I leave among you the greatest standard— the standard of the religion, the light of guidance and its radiance—and he is ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib. Lo, he is the rope of Allah: And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited; and remember the favor of Allah on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became brethren; and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it; thus does Allah make clear to you His communications that you may follow the right way (Quran 3:103, M. H. Shakir). O people, this is ‘Alī. Whoever loves him and takes him as guardian today and after today has fulfilled what he pledged to Allah; and whoever opposes him and hates him today and after today will come on the Day of Resurrection deaf and blind, having no proof before Allah.’”

So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) took ‘Alī’s hand (peace be upon him) and said [2]: “O Bedouin, this is Allah’s rope, so hold fast to him.” The Bedouin went behind ‘Alī (peace be upon him), embraced him, and said [3]: “O Allah, I call You to witness that I have held fast to Your rope.” The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “Whoever would be pleased to look at a man from the people of Paradise, let him look at this one.” Ibn Shahrāshūb then said: A similar report is narrated from al-Bāqir and al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon them).

99-/1876 - From Ibn Hārūn, who said: When the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) was mentioned, Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) would say: “May my father, mother, self, people, and progeny be ransomed for him! Wondrous it is concerning the Arabs—how do they not carry us upon their heads! And Allah says in His Book: And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it (Quran 3:103, M. H. Shakir). By the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), by Allah, they were saved.”
Quran 3:104 (M. H. Shakir): And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong, and these it is that shall be successful.
99-/1877 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good (Quran 3:104, M. H. Shakir): … (text continues).
