On the quality of lamentation, grief, and weeping for that blessed figure

On the quality of lamentation, grief, and weeping for that blessed figure.

Indication

The third objective: Regarding the manner of showing grief, sorrow, and weeping for him (a.s.), and this is of several types:

First: The weeping of the heart through worry and grief. This is the first level, and its benefit is that the reward for every breath taken in that state is the reward of glorifying Allah (tasbīḥ), as mentioned in a narration. [588]

Second: The burning of the heart. Its benefit is joy at the time of death, a joy that remains in the heart until one arrives at the Pond (Ḥawḍ) of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), as mentioned in a narration. [589]

Third: Tears gathering in the eyes before they flow upon the face. Imām al-Ṣādiq (a.s.) said that Allah shows mercy to the weeper before the tears even come out of his eyes.

Fourth: Tears coming out of the eyes, even if only the size of a fly’s wing. It is reported that this becomes a cause for the forgiveness of sins, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea. [590]

Fifth: Tears flowing from the eyes. A special quality has been mentioned for them: if a single drop were to fall into Hell, it would extinguish its heat. [591]

Sixth: Tears flowing upon the face, beard, and chest. This was the weeping of Imām al-Ṣādiq (a.s.) when elegies were recited before him. He said: “Indeed, the angels wept just as we wept, rather they wept even more, and Allah has made the entire Paradise obligatory for you.” [592]

Seventh: Crying aloud, lamenting, shouting, calling out, and even giving up one’s life. Imām al-Ṣādiq (a.s.) said in a supplication:

“O Allah, have mercy on that cry which is raised for our sake.” [593]

It is also reported that Lady Fāṭimah (a.s.) would cry loudly for him every day until the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would calm her. [594]

And it is narrated from Abū Dharr that he said:

“If you knew how great that tragedy is, you would surely weep until your souls departed from your bodies.” [595]

Eighth: Wailing. Even Yazīd, the killer of Imām Imam Husain (a.s.), said to his wife Hind:

“Wail, O Hind, for Imam Husain (a.s.), who was the chief of Quraysh, and Ibn Ziyād hastened in killing him,”

as will be explained later, if Allah wills. [596]

Ninth: Striking the head and face. This was the action of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar when the news of the martyrdom of Imām Imam Husain (a.s.) reached him. He cried out:

“There is no day like the day of Imam Husain (a.s.)!”

until people made him become silent. [597]

Tenth: Tabākī (making oneself appear as though one is weeping). This means that a person should resemble a weeper, for Paradise is promised for him. If the heart has become hard and does not burn with grief, then at least one should lower the head and show humility, sorrow, and sadness. [598]

I do not know what hardness of heart can be so severe that it does not burn over such tragedies.

It is possible that the cause of hardness of heart is one of two things:

First: Excessive involvement in acquiring more worldly wealth, which causes hardness of heart. This is indicated in a supplication where it is said:

“We seek refuge in Allah from a hard heart, a dry eye, and a stomach that is never satisfied.” [599]

Second: Excessive speech regarding useless matters, as mentioned in a narration. [600]

The cure for hardness of heart is to pass one’s hand over the head of an orphan, for in addition to the great reward found in it, it removes hardness from the heart. [601]

Eleventh: Weeping without tears because the eyes have become dry due to excessive crying. This was the state of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) after they returned to Madinah, until they treated it by drinking sawīq. [602]

Twelfth: A type of weeping whose effect becomes visible upon a person through abandoning food and drink. Mismaʿ ibn ʿAbd al-Malik informed Imām al-Ṣādiq (a.s.) that this condition would come over him whenever Imam Husain (a.s.) was mentioned. The Imām then prayed for him, [603] as will be mentioned, if Allah wills, in the sixth section concerning the special qualities of weeping.
