Maryam Ayah 54
English translation:
And among what Allah confided to Moses (peace be upon him) was: O Moses, I do not accept the prayer except from one who humbles himself to My Majesty, binds his heart to My fear, spends his day in My remembrance, does not pass the night insisting upon sin, and recognizes the right of My friends and My beloved ones. Moses (peace be upon him) said: O Lord, do You mean by Your friends and beloved ones Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? He said: That is so, except that I intended by that the one for whose sake I created Adam and Eve, and for whose sake I created Paradise and the Fire. He said: And who is he, O Lord? He said: Muhammad, Ahmad; I derived his name from My Name, for I am al-Mahmud (the Praised), and he is Muhammad (much-praised). Moses (peace be upon him) said: O Lord, make me of his community. He said to him: O Moses, you are of his community if you recognize him, and recognize his rank and the rank of his Household. Indeed, his likeness and the likeness of his Household among those I created is as the likeness of the Firdaws among the Gardens: its leaves do not fall, and its taste does not change. So whoever knows them and knows their right, I make for him knowledge in times of ignorance [1], and light in darkness. I answer him before he calls upon Me, and I give to him before he asks Me. O Moses, when you see poverty approaching, then say: Welcome to the emblem of the righteous. And when you see wealth approaching, then say: A sin whose penalty has been hastened. O Moses, this world is an abode of punishment; I punished Adam in it at his slip, and I made it accursed along with whoever is in it, except what is in it for My sake. O Moses, My righteous servants have renounced it according to the measure of their knowledge of it, and the rest of My creation have desired it according to the measure of their ignorance. And none of My creation ever magnified it and had his eye cooled in it; and none ever belittled it except that he enjoyed it.
Then Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: If you can manage not to be recognized, then do so. And what is it to you if people do not praise you? And what is it to you if you are blamed by people while you are praised by Allah? The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) used to say: There is no good in this world except for one of two men: a man who increases in kindness day by day, and a man who catches up with his appointed term by repentance—but how far is repentance for him? By Allah, even if he were to prostrate until his neck breaks, Allah would not accept from him except by our guardianship, the Household. Lo! Whoever recognizes our right and hopes for reward through us is content with his provision—a half mudd [2] each day—and with what covers his nakedness and what shelters his head; and in that they are fearful and trembling.

Rather, he was a prophet among the prophets whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent to his people. They seized him and flayed the skin of his head and his face. Then an angel came to him and said: Indeed, Allah—exalted is His Majesty—has sent me to you; so command me as you wish. He said: I take as my example what will be done to al-Husayn (peace be upon him).

English translation (99-/6901):
And from him, he said: Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Razzaz narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Abi al-Khattab, and Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Faddal, from his father, from Marwan ibn Muslim, from Burayd ibn Mu‘awiyah al-‘Ijli, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): O son of the Messenger of Allah, inform me about the Isma‘il whom Allah mentioned in His Book where He says: “And mention Ismail in the Book; surely he was truthful in (his) promise, and he was a messenger, a prophet.” Was he Isma‘il son of Ibrahim (peace be upon them), for people claim that he is Isma‘il son of Ibrahim (peace be upon them)? He (peace be upon him) said: Isma‘il died before Ibrahim, and Ibrahim was Allah’s Proof standing, a possessor of a law; so to whom then was Isma‘il sent? I said: May I be your ransom, then who was he? He (peace be upon him) said: That was Isma‘il son of Hizqil, a prophet whom Allah sent to his people. They belied him, killed him, and flayed his face. Allah became angry with them and sent to him Saṭāṭā’īl [2], the angel of punishment. He said to him: O Isma‘il, I am Saṭāṭā’īl, the angel of punishment; the Lord of Might has sent me to you to punish your people with kinds of punishments if you wish. Isma‘il said to him: I have no need of that, O Saṭāṭā’īl. Then Allah revealed to him: So what is your need, O Isma‘il? Isma‘il said: O Lord, You took the covenant for Yourself for Lordship, and for Muhammad for prophethood, and for his legatee [3] for guardianship; and You informed the best of Your creation of what his community would do to al-Husayn son of ‘Ali (peace be upon them) after its Prophet; and You have promised al-Husayn (peace be upon him) that You will return him to this world until he exacts vengeance with his own hand upon whomever did that to him. So my need from You, O Lord, is that You return me to the world so that I may exact vengeance upon whoever did that to me, just as You will return al-Husayn (peace be upon him). Allah promised that to Isma‘il son of Hizqil, and so he will return with al-Husayn son of ‘Ali (blessings of Allah be upon them).

Al-Mufid in al-Ikhtisas: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr, from Tha‘labah ibn Maymun, from Zurara, who said: I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “and he was a messenger, a prophet”—we know the messenger; who is the prophet? He said: The prophet is he who sees in his sleep and hears the voice, but does not behold the angel; and the messenger is he who beholds the angel and speaks to him. I said: And the Imam—what is his rank? He said: He hears the voice, but does not see, and does not behold the angel. Then he recited this verse: “And We did not send before you any messenger, nor prophet, nor one who is spoken to (muhaddath)” [1].

English translation (99-/6905):
Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman, from Mufaddal ibn Salih, from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) said: Gabriel (peace be upon him) informed me that an angel from among Allah’s angels, who had a great station with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, fell under displeasure [2] and was cast down from heaven to earth. He came to Idris (peace be upon him) and said: You have a station with Allah; intercede for me with your Lord. So he prayed three nights without tiring, and he fasted their days without breaking, then he petitioned Allah, Mighty and Majestic, at dawn regarding the angel. The angel said: Your request has been granted, and my wing has been loosed for me, and I love to recompense you—so ask of me a need. He said: Show me the Angel of Death, that I might find familiarity with him, for nothing is pleasant to me with his mention. So he spread his wing and said: Mount! He ascended with him seeking the Angel of Death in the lowest heaven; it was said to him: Ascend. He met him between the fourth and fifth heaven. The angel said: O Angel of Death, why do I see you frowning? He said: How wondrous! I was beneath the Shade of the Throne when I was commanded to seize the soul of a human being between the fourth and fifth heaven. Idris (peace be upon him) heard and was startled, then fell from the angel’s wing, and he seized his soul on the spot. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “And We raised him high in heaven.”
