99-/875 _8- There is a takbir in (the festival of) Fitr. I said: The takbir is only on the Day of Sacrifice (al-Nahr). He said: There is a takbir in it, but it is sunnah: at Maghrib, ‘Isha, Fajr, Zuhr, ‘Asr, and the two rak‘ahs of the Eid prayer.

Qur’an 2:186 (M H Shakir): And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way.

99-/876 _1- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father related to me, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, from Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Minqarī [1], from Hammad, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): I occupy myself with supplicating for my brothers and for the people of wilayah. What do you think about that? He said: Surely Allah, blessed and exalted, answers the supplication of one absent for another who is absent; and whoever prays for the believing men and believing women and for the people of our love, Allah returns to him—from Adam until the Hour is established—a good deed for every believer. Then he said: Allah has prescribed the prayers at the most excellent times, so you must engage in supplication after the prayers. Then he prayed for me [2] and for those present.

99-/877 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr, who said: I said to Abu’l-Hasan (peace be upon him): May I be your ransom, I have asked Allah for a need for such-and-such years, and something of unease has entered my heart due to its delay. He said: O Ahmad, beware of Satan having any way over you so as to drive you to despair. Abu Ja‘far (may Allah’s blessings be upon him) used to say: The believer asks Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for a need, and He delays hastening its answer out of love for his voice and listening to his sobbing. Then he said: By Allah, what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, delays for the believers of what they seek from this world is better for them than what He hastens for them in it. And what is this world, after all! Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) used to say: It befits the believer that his supplication in ease be like his supplication in hardship; he should not slacken when he is given. So do not grow weary of supplication, for it has a great place with Allah, Mighty and Majestic.

Translation: And you must be patient, seek the lawful, maintain kinship ties, and beware of confronting people, for we are a Household who maintain ties with those who cut us off and who do good to those who wrong us, and by Allah we see a good outcome [1] in that. Indeed, the one who enjoys worldly favor—when he asks and is given—then asks for other than what he asked, and the blessing becomes small in his eyes, so he is never satisfied with anything; and if the favors are many, the Muslim is thereby in danger because of the rights that become due upon him and because of what is feared of trial in them. Tell me about yourself: if I were to say something to you, would you trust it from me? I said: May I be your ransom, if I do not trust your word, then whom shall I trust—while you are the Proof of Allah over His creation? He said: Then be more trusting in Allah, for you are upon an appointment with Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Does not Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say: And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me (Qur’an 2:186, Shakir). And He said: Do not despair of the mercy of Allah [2] (Qur’an 39:53, Shakir: Say: O My servants who have acted extravagantly against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; surely Allah forgives the faults altogether; surely He is the Forgiving, the Merciful). And He said: And Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and abundance [3] (Qur’an 2:268, Shakir: The Shaitan threatens you with poverty and enjoins you to be niggardly, and Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself and abundance; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing). So be more trusting in Allah, Mighty and Majestic, than you are in any other; and harbor nothing but good within yourselves, for you will be forgiven [4].

99-/878 _3- From him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa, from someone who related to him, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him: Two verses in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, I seek them but do not find them. He said: And what are they? I said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: Call upon Me, I will answer you [5]—yet we call upon Him and do not see an answer! He said: Do you think Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has broken His promise? I said: No. He said: Then from where is that (problem)? I said: I do not know. He said: But I will inform you: Whoever obeys Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in what He has commanded, then calls upon Him according to the manner of supplication, He answers him. I said: And what is the manner of supplication? He said: You begin by praising Allah, and you mention His favors upon you, then you thank Him; then you bless the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family); then you mention your sins and confess them, then you seek refuge from them—this is the manner of supplication. Then he said: And what is the other verse? I said: The saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And whatever thing you spend, He exceeds it, and He is the best of sustainers [6]—yet I spend and do not see any replacement! He said: Do you think Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has broken His promise? I said: No. He said: From where is that? I said: I do not know. He said: If one of you were to earn wealth from what is lawful and spend it in that (which is proper), he would not spend a single dirham but that it would be replaced for him.
