S 111 Ayat 1 to 5
99-/11978 _1- In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and may he be ruined. And his wife, the carrier of firewood, in her neck is a rope of twisted fiber. (Surah al-Masad, 111:1–5, M. H. Shakir)
[1-5] /11978 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding the saying of Allah, "May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and may he be ruined" (Surah al-Masad, 111:1), said: "It means that he has lost." When he gathered with the Quraysh in Dar al-Nadwa and pledged with them to kill Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and he had a great deal of wealth, Allah said: “His wealth will not avail him, nor what he has earned. He will burn in a flaming fire.” (Surah al-Lahab, 111:2–3) And his wife: "And his wife, the carrier of firewood" (Surah al-Masad, 111:4), he said: "Her name was Umm Jamil, the daughter of Asad. She used to slander the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and convey his sayings to the disbelievers." “She carries wood” — meaning she used to carry harmful things against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). “In her neck is a rope of twisted fiber” — meaning a rope made of fire, referring to her punishment. His name was 'Abd Manaf, but Allah gave him the nickname "Abu Lahab" because "Manaf" was the name of an idol they worshiped.
99-/11979 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya'qub: From Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa, from Ibn Abi Umayr; and Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi Umayr, from al-Husayn ibn Abi Hamza, from Abu Abd Allah (peace be upon him), who said: “When the Quraysh intended to kill the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), they said: How can we handle Abu Lahab? Umm Jamil said: I will take care of him. I will tell him: I want you to sit today [in the house] so we can drink together. So when the next day came and the idolaters prepared to attack the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), Abu Lahab and Umm Jamil sat drinking. Abu Talib then called Ali (peace be upon him) and said: O my son, go to your uncle Abu Lahab and open the door for him. If the door is opened for you, enter; but if it is not opened, force the door open and enter. When you enter, say to him: Your uncle says: Verily, a man whose uncle is his eye among the people is not a fool.”

He said: So the Commander of the Believers (peace be upon him) went, and he found the door closed. He asked for permission to enter, but it was not granted. He then forced the door open and entered. When Abu Lahab saw him, he said: “What is it, O son of my brother?” He replied: “My father says to you: Verily, a man whose uncle is his eye among the people is not a fool.”
Abu Lahab said: “Your father spoke the truth. So, what is it, O son of my brother?” He replied: “Your nephew is going to be killed while you are eating and drinking!”
Abu Lahab jumped up, took his sword, and Umm Jamil clung to him. He raised his hand and slapped her face, causing her eye to be gouged out. She died blind. Then Abu Lahab came out with the sword, and when the Quraysh saw him, they noticed the anger on his face. They asked: “What is it, O Abu Lahab?”
He replied: “I swear by al-Lat and al-‘Uzza, I was about to embrace Islam, and then you want to kill my nephew! You will see what I do.”
They apologized to him, and he returned.

99-/11980 _3- Sa'd ibn Abdullah: From Ali ibn Ismail ibn Isa, and Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Abi al-Khattab, from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr al-Khazzaz, from Amr ibn Shimr, from Jabir ibn Yazid, from Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him), who said:
*“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prayed one night and recited: ‘May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and may he be ruined.’ It was said to Umm Jamil, the wife of Abu Lahab: ‘Indeed, Muhammad has been calling both you and your husband during his prayer.’ So she went out seeking him, saying: ‘If I see him, I will make him hear what he does not like.’ She kept saying: ‘Who has seen Muhammad for me?’ She reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) while Abu Bakr was sitting with him next to a garden. Abu Bakr said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if you move a little, this is Umm Jamil and I am afraid she might make you hear something you dislike.’ He replied: ‘She cannot see me, and she will not see me.’
She came until she stood before them and said: ‘O Abu Bakr, have you seen Muhammad?’ He replied: ‘No.’ Then she went away.”*
Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him) said: “A yellow veil was placed between them.”
99-/11981 _4- Ibn Shahr Ashub: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “I was sent to my family in particular, and to the people in general.”
It is mentioned that three years after his prophethood, as stated by al-Ṭabarī in his Tārīkh, al-Khārkūshī in his Tafsīr, and Muhammad ibn Isḥāq in his Kitāb, from Abū Mālik, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and from Ibn Jubayr:
“When the verse ‘And warn your nearest kindred’ [Surah al-Shu'ara, 26:214] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gathered the Banī Hāshim, and they were forty men at that time. He ordered Ali to cook a lamb's leg and bake a ṣaʿ (measure) of food for them, and brought a ʿis (jug) of milk. Then he began to bring them to him, ten by ten, until they were full. Indeed, among them were those who ate the whole lamb and drank the entire jug of milk. And with this, he showed them the extraordinary sign (the miracle).”

Al-Majlisī (may Allah have mercy on him) said: What is meant by "the uncle" is either Abū Lahab or the person himself — and the first is more apparent, as the outward meaning suggests that the statement was driven by tribal pride. What is meant by "the eye" is the chief, or the observer and protector. The point is: someone whose uncle is like yours — the leader and head of the people — should not be humiliated. 99-/11982 _5- And in the narration of al-Bara' ibn ʿĀzib and Ibn ʿAbbās: Abu Lahab preempted them and said: “This is the man who has bewitched you.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to them: “I have been sent to the black, the white, and the red. Allah has commanded me to warn my nearest kindred, and I do not have anything to offer you from Allah except that you say: ‘There is no god but Allah.’”
Abu Lahab said: “Is this why you called us?” Then they dispersed from him. After that, the verse “May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and may he be ruined” [Surah al-Masad, 111:1] was revealed.
Then he called them a second time, and fed them and gave them drink. Then he said to them: “O Banī ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, obey me and you will become the kings and rulers of the earth. Allah has never sent a prophet except that He appointed a successor for him: a brother, a minister. So who among you will be my brother, my minister, my successor, my heir, and the one who will pay my debts?”

“So who among you will pledge allegiance to me to be my brother and companion?”
No one stood up to him, and ʿAlī, being the youngest of them, said: “I will.” He said for the third time: “Yes.” And he struck his hand over the hand of the Commander of the Believers.

The people hesitated, and ʿAlī (peace be upon him) said: “I am, O Prophet of Allah, to be your minister upon this.”
He took him by the neck and then said: “This is my brother, my successor, and my representative among you. Listen to him and obey him.”
The people stood up, laughing, and said to Abū Ṭālib: “He has commanded you to listen to your son and obey him.”

99-/11987 _10- And in the narration of al-Ḥārith ibn Nuwfal, Abū Rāfiʿ, and ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Asadī, from ʿAlī (peace be upon him):
“I said: I am, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: "You are," and he brought me closer to him, then he spittle into my mouth.
The people stood up, laughing, and said: “What a terrible favor this is that the son of his uncle has received, for he has followed him and believed in him.”

99-/11988 _11- (Tārīkh al-Ṭabarī): From Rabīʿah ibn Nājid: A man said to ʿAlī (peace be upon him): “O Commander of the Believers, by what right did you inherit your cousin and not your uncle?”
He (peace be upon him) said — after mentioning the story of the invitation —: “No one stood up to him, but I stood up to him, and I was the youngest among them. He said: 'Sit down.' Then he said this three times. Each time I stood up to him, he would tell me to sit down. When it was the third time, he struck my hand with his hand and said: 'By this, I inherited from my cousin, and not from my uncle.'”
99-/11989 _12- And in the narration of Abū Rāfiʿ: “Abu Bakr said to al-ʿAbbās: 'I ask you by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gathered you and said: 'O Banī ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Allah has never sent a prophet except that He appointed from his family a minister, a brother, a successor, and a representative among his people. So who among you will stand and pledge allegiance to me to be my brother, my minister, my heir, my successor, and my representative among my people?'
Then ʿAlī (peace be upon him) pledged allegiance to him based on what he had stipulated. And if this statement is authentic, then his Imāmah after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is established without question.”*
