Translation: His companion, which of you will prefer his brother? Yet both disliked death. So Allah revealed to them: Why were you not like My friend, ‘Ali son of Abi Talib? I made brotherhood between him and Muhammad, My Prophet, and he preferred him with life over himself; then he remained lying upon his bed, shielding him with his very life. Descend both of you to the earth together and guard him from his enemy. So Jibril descended and sat by his head, and Mika’il at his feet, and Jibril began to say: Bravo, bravo! Who is like you, O son of Abu Talib? Allah boasts of you before the angels! Then Allah revealed: And among men is he who sells himself… the verse. [Al-Baqara 2:207 — M. H. Shakir: And among men is he who sells himself to seek the pleasure of Allah; and Allah is Affectionate to the servants.]
99-/1082 _11- And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding the meaning of the verse, said: That is the Commander of the Faithful, and the meaning of “yashri nafsahu” is: he gives himself.
99-/1083 _12- And in Nahj al-Bayan: This verse was revealed about the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), when he spent the night on the bed of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family). This was because Quraysh had conspired to kill him by night, and they agreed among themselves that from every tribe a youth would volunteer, and they would fall upon him by night while he slept and strike him with the blow of a single man, so that his blood would not be avenged, since his killer would not be known specifically, and none of them would be singled out for it, as each would have had only a part in it. So Jibril (peace be upon him) descended to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), informed him of that, and ordered him to have his cousin ‘Ali (peace be upon him) sleep on his bed, while he himself depart as an emigrant to Medina. He did so, and the youths came—according to what they had pledged and covenanted—seeking him. They burst into the house, and found ‘Ali (peace be upon him) sleeping on his bed. He cleared his throat, so they recognized him, and they turned back disappointed and losers, and Allah delivered His Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) from their plotting. This is narrated from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them both).

99-/1094 _10- From Mas‘adah ibn Sadaqah, from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, the knowledge with which Adam descended, and all by which the prophets up to the Seal of the Prophets and Messengers were favored, is in the progeny of the Seal of the Prophets and Messengers. So where are you being led astray to? Where are you going, O assembly born from the loins of the Companions of the Ark? This is the parable that applies among you: just as some among them were saved in those two [events], likewise some among you will be saved in this one of yours—this I pledge upon my honor. And woe to whoever lags behind them; they are among you like the Companions of the Cave; and their likeness is the Gate of Hittah; and they are the Gate of Peace. So enter into submission one and all, and do not follow the footsteps of Shaytan.
99-/1095 _11- Ibn Shahrashub: from Zayn al-‘Abidin and Ja‘far al-Sadiq (peace be upon them both), they said: Enter into submission one and all—meaning in the wilaya of ‘Ali (peace be upon him); and do not follow the footsteps of Shaytan—they said: Do not follow other than him.
99-/1096 _12- From Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): Enter into submission one and all—It is in our wilaya.
Translation: What do they wait for but that Allah should come to them in the coverings of the clouds with the angels, and the matter has already been decided? and to Allah do all affairs return. [Al-Baqara 2:210, M. H. Shakir]
99-/1097 _1- Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Yunus al-Ma‘adhi narrated to us; he said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘id al-Kufi al-Hamdani narrated to us; he said: ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddal narrated to us, from his father, who said: I asked al-Rida ‘Ali ibn Musa (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: What do they wait for but that Allah should come to them in the coverings of the clouds with the angels. He said: He says: What do they wait for but that Allah should bring to them the angels in the coverings of the clouds—and thus it was revealed. And about Allah’s saying: And your Lord comes with the angels in ranks—he said: Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is not described by coming and going—exalted is He above movement; rather, what is meant is: And the command of your Lord comes, and the angels in ranks. [Al-Fajr 89:22, M. H. Shakir: And your Lord comes with the angels in ranks.]
