99-/616 _14- (al-Manaqib: 322/276): From the path of the opponents: al-Shāfi‘ī Ibn al-Maghāzilī relates in his book al-Manāqib, with his chain up to ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “I am the supplication of my father Abraham (peace be upon him).” I said: O Messenger of Allah, how did you become the supplication of your father Abraham (peace be upon him)? He then narrated the previous hadith verbatim up to his (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) statement: “So the supplication ended with me and with ‘Alī (peace be upon him). Not one of us ever prostrated to an idol. Allah then made me a prophet and made ‘Alī a legatee.”

And when We made the House a resort for men and a (place of) safety, and: Appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standing place of Abraham. [Qur’an 2:125, M. H. Shakir]

He said: “If he is still in the city, he should perform the two rak‘ahs at the Station of Abraham (peace be upon him), for surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘And appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standing place of Abraham.’ But if he has already departed, I do not command him to return.”

He said: “If he has departed, I will not impose hardship on him nor command him to return; rather, he should pray wherever he remembers.”

99-/621 _5- (al-Tahdhīb 5:454/138): And from him, from Mūsā ibn al-Qāsim, from Muhammad ibn Sinān, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Muskān, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh al-Abzārī, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) about a man who forgot to perform the two rak‘ahs of the obligatory ṭawāf in the Ḥijr. He said: “He must repeat them behind the Maqām, because Allah says: ‘And appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standing place of Abraham’—meaning the two rak‘ahs of the obligatory ṭawāf.”

99-/622 _6- (al-Tahdhīb 5:463/140): And from him, with his chain, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Sa‘īd, from Muhammad ibn Sinān, from Ibn Muskān, who said: Someone who asked him related to me regarding a man who forgets the two rak‘ahs of the obligatory ṭawāf until he leaves; he said: “He should appoint a proxy.” Ibn Muskān said: And in another report: “If he has passed the miqāt of the people of his land, let him return and perform them, for Allah, Exalted, says: ‘And appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standing place of Abraham.’”

99-/623 _7- (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 1:91/58): Al-‘Ayyāshī, from Muhammad ibn al-Fuḍayl, from Abū al-Ṣabāḥ, said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) was asked about a man who forgot to perform two rak‘ahs at the Station of Abraham (peace be upon him) during ṭawāf, in ḥajj or ‘umrah. He said: “If he is in the city, he should perform two rak‘ahs at the Station of Abraham, for Allah says: ‘And appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standing place of Abraham.’ But if he has departed and traveled on, I do not command him to return.”

99-/624 _8- (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 1:92/58): From al-Ḥalabī, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about a man who performed the obligatory ṭawāf around the House—whether in ḥajj or ‘umrah—and was unaware that he should perform two rak‘ahs at the Station of Abraham (peace be upon him). He said: “He should perform them even after some days, because Allah says: ‘And appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standing place of Abraham.’”

And We enjoined Abraham and Ishmael saying: Purify My House for those who visit (it) and those who abide (in it) for devotion and those who bow down and those who prostrate themselves. [Qur’an 2:125, M. H. Shakir]

99-/625 _1- (Tafsīr al-Qummī 1:59): ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm: Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said: “It means: remove the polytheists from it.”

And he said: “When Abraham built the House and people performed ḥajj, the Ka‘bah complained to Allah, Blessed and Exalted, about what it suffered from the hands and breaths of the polytheists. Allah revealed to it: ‘Be at peace, My Ka‘bah, for I shall send in the end of times a people who cleanse themselves with twigs of trees and use toothpicks.’”

He said: “Yes. Surely Allah, Exalted, says: ‘Purify My House for those who circumambulate, and those who abide in devotion, and those who bow and prostrate.’ And it befits a servant not to enter except in a state of purity, having washed away sweat and filth and purified himself.”

99-/630 _6- (Majma‘ al-Bayān 2:383): Abū ‘Alī al-Ṭabrisī in Majma‘ al-Bayān, on the reason for revelation, from Ibn ‘Abbās, said: When Abraham brought Ishmael and Hājar and settled them in Mecca, time passed, the Jurhum tribe settled there, and Ishmael married a woman from them. Hājar died, and Abraham sought permission from Sarah to visit Hājar; she permitted him on the condition that he not dismount. Abraham (peace be upon him) arrived, and Hājar had already died. He went to Ishmael’s house and said to his wife, “Where is your husband?” She said, “He is not here; he has gone hunting.” Ishmael used to go outside the ḥaram to hunt and then return. Abraham said to her, “Do you have any hospitality to offer?” She said, “I have nothing, and there is no one with me.” He said to her, “When your husband comes, convey to him my greetings, and tell him to change the threshold of his door.” Abraham (peace be upon him) left. Ishmael (peace be upon him) came and sensed his father’s fragrance. He asked his wife, “Has anyone come to you?” She said, “An old man came with such-and-such description,” belittling him. He asked, “What did he say to you?” She said, “He told me: Convey your husband my greetings and tell him to change the threshold of his door.” So he divorced her and married another woman. Abraham remained as long as Allah willed, then sought permission from Sarah to visit Ishmael (peace be upon him); she permitted him, stipulating that he not dismount. Abraham (peace be upon him) came until he reached Ishmael’s door and said to his wife, “Where is your husband?” She said, “He is out hunting, and he will come to me now, God willing. Please dismount—may Allah show you mercy.” He said to her, “Do you have any hospitality to offer?” She said, “Yes,” and she brought milk and meat. He supplicated for blessings upon her; had she brought, on that day, bread or wheat or barley or dates, the land of Allah would have been the most abundant in wheat, barley, and dates. She said to him, “Dismount so I may wash your head.” He did not dismount, so she brought the Maqām, placed it at his right side, and he put his foot upon it; the imprint of his foot remained upon it. She washed the right side of his head, then moved the Maqām to his left side; the imprint of his foot remained upon it, and she washed the left side of his head. He said to her, “When your husband comes, convey to him my greetings, and tell him: Your door’s threshold has become upright.” When Ishmael came, he sensed his father’s fragrance and said to his wife, “Has anyone come to you?” She said, “Yes, an elder, the most handsome of people in face and the most pleasant in scent. He told me such-and-such, and I said to him such-and-such, and I washed his head. And here are the places of his two feet on the Maqām.” Ishmael (peace be upon him) said to her: “That was Abraham (peace be upon him).”

99-/631 _7- (Majma‘ al-Bayān 1:384): Abū ‘Alī then said: This very story has been narrated by ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from Abān, from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him), though some of its wording differs. He said at the end of it: “When your husband comes, say to him: An elder came here, advising you good regarding your door’s threshold.” So Ishmael (peace be upon him) embraced the Maqām, wept, and kissed it.

99-/632 _8- (Majma‘ al-Bayān 1:384): He then said: And in another narration from him (peace be upon him): “Abraham (peace be upon him) sought permission from Sarah to visit Ishmael (peace be upon him). She permitted him on condition that he not stay away from her and not dismount from his donkey.” It was asked: How was that? He said: “The earth was folded up for him.”

And when Abraham said: My Lord, make this a secure town and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the last day. He said: And whoever disbelieves, I will grant him enjoyment for a short while. [Qur’an 2:126, M. H. Shakir]
