Its proofs for his prophethood, and for what he described of the merit of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) and his rank above all creatures, and what He made clear of the succession of Ali and his designation as legatee, and the command regarding his successors after him—then you took the calf as a god after him when he departed to the mountain, and you opposed his successor whom he had designated and left over you, namely Harun (peace be upon him). And you were wrongdoers, unbelievers, on account of what you did in that.

[2:93] And when We made a covenant with you and raised the mountain above you: Take hold of what We have given you with firmness and hear. They said: We hear and disobey. And they were made to imbibe (the love of) the calf into their hearts on account of their unbelief. Say: Evil is that which your belief enjoins on you if you are believers. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/561 _1- The Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And recall when We did that to your forefathers when they refused to accept what Musa (peace be upon him) brought them of the religion of Allah and His laws, and of the command to prefer Muhammad and Ali (blessings of Allah upon them) and their successors over the rest of creation.

Take what We have given you—we said to them: Take what We have given you of these obligations with the strength that We have made for you and by which We have enabled you, having removed your excuses in the way We constituted you; and hear what is said to you and what you are commanded.” They said, “We hear Your word and we disobey Your command,” meaning they disobeyed thereafter, and they also harbored disobedience at that very moment. And they were made to imbibe the calf into their hearts—they were commanded to drink (water mixed with) the calf whose filings had been sprinkled into the water they were ordered to drink, so that it might be made clear who had worshipped it and who had not. On account of their unbelief they were commanded to do that.

Say, O Muhammad: Evil is what your belief in Musa is commanding you—namely, your disbelief in Muhammad and Ali and the friends of Allah from their progeny—if you are believers in the Torah of Musa. But Allah forbid—your faith in the Torah does not command you to disbelieve in Muhammad and Ali (peace be upon them).”

The Imam (peace be upon him) said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: Verily Allah, exalted, reminded the Children of Israel in the era of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) of the states of their fathers who were in the days of Musa (peace be upon him): how the covenant and pledge were taken upon them regarding Muhammad and Ali and their pure ones—chosen for the caliphate over the creatures—and regarding their companions and their Shia and the rest of the nation of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family).”

99-/561 _1- So He said: And when We took your covenant—remember when We took the covenant of your fathers, and We raised above you the Tur, the mountain, when they refused to accept what was required of them and to acknowledge it—“Take what We have given you with strength,” meaning with the strength that We gave you which suits that, “and hear,” that is, obey regarding it.

They said, “We have heard with our ears and we have disobeyed with our hearts.” Outwardly, all of them gave obedience, humbled and subdued. Then He said: And they were made to imbibe the calf into their hearts on account of their unbelief—they were subjected to drinking (water containing) the calf they had worshipped until what they drank of it reached their hearts.

And he said: “When Musa returned to them and they had worshipped the calf, they met him with (professed) renunciation of that. Musa said to them: Who among you worshipped it so that I may carry out Allah’s ruling upon him? They feared Allah’s ruling to be carried out upon them, so they denied having worshipped it, and each began to say: I did not worship it; it was someone else who worshipped it. And they informed against one another. That is what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, related from Musa in his words to the Samiri: And look at your god to whose worship you kept—surely we will burn it, then we will scatter it into the sea completely (20:97). So Allah commanded him; he filed it down with files, took its filings and scattered them into fresh water, then said to them: Drink from it. They drank, and everyone who had worshipped it—if he had been of fair complexion—his lips and nose turned black; and whoever among them had been dark of complexion—his lips and nose turned white. At that point Allah’s ruling was executed among them.”

99-/562 _2- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu Basir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And they were made to imbibe the calf into their hearts on account of their unbelief.

He said: “When Musa (peace be upon him) conversed privately with his Lord, it was revealed to him: O Musa, I have tried your people. He said: With what, my Lord? He said: With the Samiri. He said: And what did the Samiri do? He said: He fashioned for them, from their ornaments, a calf. He said: My Lord, surely their ornaments could suffice for a gazelle to be fashioned from them, or an image, or a calf—so how did it put them to trial? He said: He fashioned for them a calf, and it lowed. He said: My Lord, who made it low? He said: I did. Then Musa said at that moment: You cause to err by it whom You please and guide whom You please (7:155).” He said: “When Musa returned to his people and saw them worshipping the calf, he threw down the tablets from his hand and they broke.”

So Musa proceeded to file the calf from its nose to the tip of its tail, then he burned it with fire and scattered it on the sea. [2:94-96] Say: If the future abode with Allah is specially for you to the exclusion of the people, then invoke death if you are truthful.

And they will never invoke it on account of what their hands have sent before; and Allah knows the unjust.

And you will most certainly find them the greediest of men for life (greedier) than even those who set up partners with Allah; one of them loves that he should be granted a life of a thousand years, and his being granted a long life will in no way remove him further off from the chastisement, and Allah sees what they do.

So they resorted to obstinacy and said: ‘We do not know what to say, but we say: Paradise is exclusively for us, apart from you, O Muhammad, and apart from Ali, and apart from the people of your religion and your community; we are being tried by you and tested; we are the sincere friends of Allah and His righteous servants; our supplication is answered—none of our requests to our Lord are refused.’
