Translator’s Preface (Persian)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

Praise and glorification belong exclusively to Allah—great is His Majesty—who made this world the abode of afflictions and the place of trials; and limitless gratitude befits that Lord—magnificent are His blessings—who reserved the banquet of tribulation for His chosen friends.

And boundless and innumerable blessings be upon the most noble Prophet, the divinely guided Messenger, the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), and upon his righteous family and his purified progeny.

Especially upon the unrivaled champion in the field of self-sacrifice, the knight of the arena of heroism, the martyr in the path of Allah, the one annihilated in the way of Divine pleasure, the thirsty-lipped one of Karbala, the slain one whose remembrance brings tears and lamentation, and the intercessor on the Day of Mourning; the one at whose tragedy the components of creation were transformed, and all that exists besides Allah became sorrowful and grief-stricken in his mourning; in everything there is a sign of his tribulation, and in every thing a mark of his sufferings.

The sky resembles his blessed back, bent by the death of his brother; and the earth, under the weight of the mountain of his calamity, sank to the great fish beneath it.

Fire speaks of the burning of his liver, and water is a sign of his tearful eyes.

The stars correspond to the number of his wounds, and the sun points to his unclothed body.

The moon is a sign of the Moon of Banu Hashim, and the cypress alludes to the graceful stature of Qasim (a.s.).

The pine tree points to Ali al-Akbar (a.s.), and the lily reminds one of the lips of Ali al-Asghar (a.s.).

The rose speaks of the tearing of his body, and the thorn complains of the enemy’s spear.

The warm earth recalls his place of slaughter, the spear tells of his head, the dagger of his throat, the sword of the wounds upon his body, the chain of his sick son, the rope of his weeping children, the horse of

his Dhu al-Janah, and the she-camel of his helpless captives.

The birds are messengers announcing his martyrdom, and the wild beasts are mourners over his condition.

The rain symbolizes the arrows of aggression, and the thunder the sound of women beating their chests.

The lightning points to the burning of the tents, and the halo tells of the dust settled upon that full moon.

The rainbow resembles the bows of the ignoble people, the hail represents the stones, and the twilight redness tells of the blood.

The mountains are signs of the encampment, and the flower gardens point to the place of slaughter.

The forests resemble the spears of the enemies, and the seas tell the story of that desert.

The ships point to that Ark of Salvation which was broken by the storm of calamities; and the rivers grieve for those lips exhausted by the intensity of thirst.

The finger points to “Bajdal ibn Sulaym,” and the hand alludes to “the vile camel-driver.”

The head complains of the ill-fated Shimr, and the heart speaks of the poisoned arrow.

The scorched chest recalls that chest trampled by horses, and the broken teeth recall those teeth struck with a cane; and every body reflects that unclothed body.

Ah! What can I say?!

Alas for his unclothed body,

That body rolling in dust and blood.

His head upon the spear was like the sun,

And the sun hid itself from his face.

The spear and arrow made him a sun,

Like the rays of the sun in the heavens.

A resurrection appeared through his martyrdom,

Its sun being the spear raised above his head.

If I say that noble one is a sun,

When has the sun ever had a body torn into a hundred pieces?

Or if I call him a shining moon,

When has the moon borne more wounds than the stars?

He is neither sun nor moon, yet with a single glance,

He continually gives light to both sun and moon.

The light of both eyes and the illumination of both luminaries is the oppressed martyr, Abu Abdillah al-Imam Husain (a.s.).

سلام الله عليه و علي آبائه الطاهرين، و أبنائه المنتجبين

May the peace of Allah be upon him, upon his pure forefathers, and upon his chosen descendants.

And may countless curses be upon the enemies of the Household of Prophethood and the killers of the Family of Infallibility and Purity, forever and for all ages.

As for what follows:

Thus says the sinful servant and the one drowned in the oceans of hopes and aspirations:

Muhammad Imam Husain (a.s.) ibn Muhammad Ali al-Husaini al-Marʿashi al-Shahristani (may Allah forgive them both):

This insignificant one, entirely deficient, from the beginning of my life when I reached the age of seven until now that my age has reached fifty years, has constantly been occupied with the pursuit of knowledge. Never have I rested from this endeavor. From every table I took provisions, from every harvest I gathered ears of grain, and in every field I engaged in writing and authorship: in morphology, grammar, logic, rhetoric, theology, divine philosophy, mathematics, principles of jurisprudence, jurisprudence, biographical studies, hadith, tafsir, supplications, and other sciences.

When I reflected, however, I realized that I had missed the essential matter. I had not cast anything into the mold of authorship concerning the elegies of the Martyred Imam (a.s.).

This thought came to me during the journey of visitation to the Eighth Imam (a.s.), while returning from that sacred land to Tehran and staying there during the winter days.

Since the means and books necessary for composing a new work were unavailable, it occurred to my limited mind that I should translate into Persian the book “Khasa'is al-Imam Husain (a.s.)”, which in this field is among the greatest and most beneficial books of elegies, so that both the common people and the learned might benefit from it.

Perhaps during the course of translation I may add explanations and observations, which would complete its benefit.

And through this means I may have my name entered into the register of those who remember that Master, and attain the blessings of his noble means.

و الله وليي، و هو حسبي، و نعم الوكيل

And Allah is my Guardian; He is sufficient for me, and He is the Best Trustee.

And I named it:

«دمع العين، علي خصائص الحسين»

“The Tear of the Eye upon the Unique Virtues of al-Imam Husain (a.s.)”

و بالله نستعين، فانه خير معين

And from Allah we seek help, for He is the best Helper.
