It was said to him: So what is the means? He said: “Financial breadth: when he can perform the Hajj with part of it and leave part with which he sustains his dependents. Has not Allah made zakat obligatory, and He only made it due upon one who owns two hundred dirhams?”

From Abu Basir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him: A man had Hajj offered to him, but he was shy to accept it—does he count as one who is able to perform Hajj? He said: “Yes. Tell him not to be shy, even if it is on a tailless donkey; and if he can walk part of the way and ride part of the way, then he should do so.”

From Abu Usamah Zayd al-Shahham, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And pilgrimage to the House is incumbent upon men for the sake of Allah, upon everyone who is able to undertake the journey to it.” I asked him: What is the means? He said: “That he has what he can perform Hajj with.” I said: What if money is offered to him to perform Hajj, but he is shy to accept it? He said: “He is among those who are able to undertake the journey to it.” He also said: “And if he can bear walking part of the way and riding part of the way, then he should do so.” I said: What about Allah’s saying, “and whoever disbelieves”—is it about Hajj? He said: “Yes—it is ingratitude for blessings.” And he said in another report: “and whoever abandons [it].”

[Qur’an 3:97, M. H. Shakir]

From Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) regarding Allah Most High’s saying: “whoever is able to make a way to it”: He said: “You set out; and if you do not have [means], you walk.” I said: We cannot manage that. He said: “You walk and ride at times.” I said: We cannot manage that. He said: “You serve some people and go out with them [to Hajj].”

[Qur’an 3:97, M. H. Shakir]

From ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about His saying: “And pilgrimage to the House is incumbent upon men for the sake of Allah, upon everyone who is able to undertake the journey to it.” He said: “Health in his body, and ability in his wealth.” And in the narration of Hafs al-A‘war from him, he said: “Strength in the body, and sufficiency in wealth.”

[Qur’an 3:97, M. H. Shakir]

[Qur’an 3:101, M. H. Shakir] “and whoever holds fast to Allah, he indeed is guided to the right path.”

Ibn Babawayh said: ‘Ali ibn al-Fadl ibn al-‘Abbas al-Baghdadi in al-Ray, known as Abu al-Hasan al-Khuyuti [1], narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn al-Harith narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Khalaf al-‘Attar narrated to us, who said: al-Husayn al-Ashqar narrated to us. He said: I said to Hisham ibn al-Hakam: What do you mean by your statement that the Imam must be infallible? He said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about that, and he said: “The infallible is the one who refrains by Allah’s [protection] from all of Allah’s prohibitions. And Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has said: ‘and whoever holds fast to Allah, he indeed is guided to the right path.’”

[Qur’an 3:101, M. H. Shakir]

[Qur’an 3:102, M. H. Shakir] O you who believe! be careful of (your duty to) Allah with the care which is due to Him, and do not die unless you are Muslims.

[4]

Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Saffar [narrated] from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from his father, from al-Nadr, from Abu al-Husayn, from Abu Basir, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Fear Allah as is His due.” He said: “He is to be obeyed and not disobeyed, remembered and not forgotten, and thanked and not denied.” Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqi, from his father, from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd, from Abu al-Husayn, from Abu Basir, said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) the same. [2] Al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd, from Abu al-Husayn [3], from Abu Basir, said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) the same. [4]

Ibn Shahrashub: from (Tafsir Waki‘), who said: Sufyan ibn Murrah al-Hamdani narrated to us, from ‘Abd Khayr, who said: I asked ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) about His saying, Most High: “O you who believe! Fear Allah as is His due.” He said: “By Allah, none acted upon it except the Household of the Messenger of Allah. We remembered Allah and so we do not forget Him; we thanked Him and so we will never deny Him; and we obeyed Him and so we did not disobey Him. When this verse was revealed, the Companions said: ‘We cannot manage that.’ So Allah, Most High, revealed: ‘So be careful of (your duty to) Allah as much as you can.’” Waki‘ said: “[that is], as much as you are able.” Then he said: “‘And hear and obey’ [what you are commanded],” [5] meaning: obey Allah, His Messenger, and His Household in what they command you.”
