The night before battle, Hanzala was intimate with his wife, and in the morning he left in a state of major ritual impurity and attended the battle. As Hanzala was about to depart, his wife summoned four men from the Ansar and had them bear witness that he had been intimate with her. She was asked why she did that. She said: I saw in my sleep that night as if the sky split open and Hanzala was raised into it, then it closed. I knew that it meant martyrdom, and I did not want that he should not have witnesses. She became pregnant from him. When Hanzala reached the battle, he saw Abu Sufyan on a horse moving between the two ranks, so he charged him and struck the hamstring of his horse; the horse collapsed and Abu Sufyan fell to the ground and cried out: O people of Quraysh, I am Abu Sufyan and this is Hanzala who wants to kill me. Abu Sufyan fled, and Hanzala passed in pursuit of him. A polytheist confronted him and thrust at him; Hanzala moved forward into the thrust and struck him and killed him, then Hanzala fell to the ground between Hamza, and Amr ibn al-Jamuh, and Abd Allah ibn Hizam, and a group from the Ansar. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: I saw the angels washing Hanzala between the heaven and the earth with the water of rain-clouds in basins of gold. Thereafter he was called “the one washed by the angels.”

Qur’an 3:125 (Al ‘Imran 3:125): Yea! if you remain patient and guard (against evil), and they come upon you in a hurry, your Lord will assist you with five thousand of the angels distinguished (by marks). [M. H. Shakir]

He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) strove that ‘Ali (peace be upon him) be the guardian of the affair after him, and that is what Allah meant by, You have no concern in the affair. And how could he not have a share in the affair when it was delegated to him? For He said: Whatever the Prophet makes lawful is lawful, and whatever the Prophet makes unlawful is unlawful.

99-/1910: Al-‘Ayyashi: from Jabir al-Ju‘fi, who said: I recited before Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) Allah’s saying: You have no concern in the affair. He said: Yes, by Allah, he has in the affair something and something and something. It is not as you have supposed. But I will inform you: when Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) to make manifest the guardianship of ‘Ali (peace be upon him), he considered his people’s enmity toward him, and his knowledge of them. And that is what Allah preferred him with …
