Two Years After the Birth and Cry of the Prophet upon Him
Two Years After the Birth and Cry of the Prophet upon Him
When two years had passed from his birth, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) went on a journey. One day during the journey he stopped and said:
“Surely we are Allah's and to Him we shall surely return.” (Qur'an 2:156, M. H. Shakir)
Then he wept.
When he was asked about the reason, he said:
“Jibrāʾīl informed me of a land near the Euphrates River called Karbalāʾ. My son Imam Husain (a.s.) will be martyred there. It is as though I can see the place of his martyrdom and the location of his grave. It is as though I can see the captives riding upon camel saddles, and the head of my son Imam Husain (a.s.) being carried as a gift to the accursed Yazīd.
By Allah, no one will look at that head and rejoice except that Allah will place disagreement between his heart and his tongue and will punish him with a severe punishment.”
Then the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) returned from the journey in grief and sorrow. He ascended the pulpit carrying Imam Husain (a.s.) with him. He delivered a sermon and gave admonition.
Then he placed his right hand upon the head of Hasan (a.s.) and his left hand upon the head of Imam Husain (a.s.) and said:
“O Allah, Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) is Your servant and Your Prophet. These two are among the righteous members of my family, the best of my clan, the finest of my descendants, and those whom I leave among my nation after me.
Jibrāʾīl has informed me that this one will be killed through poison and that the other will be martyred by the sword.
O Allah, bless his martyrdom, make him the Master of the Martyrs, do not place blessing in his killer or in those who abandon him, and cast them into the lowest depths of Hell.”
The narrator says:
Then the sounds of crying and lamentation arose from the people in the mosque. [630]
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said:
“O people, you weep for him, yet you will not help him?
O Allah, be You his Helper.”
Then he said:
“O people, I leave among you two precious and weighty things: the Book of Allah and my family (ʿItrah), who are the fruit of my heart and the delight of my soul. These two will never separate until they come to me at the Pond (Ḥawḍ).
Know that I ask nothing from you except what Allah has commanded me to ask, and that is love and affection for them.
Therefore beware lest you come to me after having harmed my family, oppressed them, or transgressed against them.
And know that on the Day of Judgment three banners from this nation will come before me.
The first will be a dark black banner from which even the angels will be terrified. They will stand before me and I will ask:
‘Who are you?’
They will say:
‘We are the people of tawḥīd from among the Arabs.’
They will forget to mention my name.
I will say:
‘I am Ahmad, the Prophet of Arabs and non-Arabs.’
Then they will say:
‘We are from your nation.’
I will ask:
‘How did you deal with my family and my Book after me?’
They will reply:
‘As for the Book, we neglected it and did not act upon it. As for your family, we sought to remove them from the face of the earth.’
When I hear these words, I will turn away from them, and they will return from the Pond with blackened faces and burning thirst.”
“Then another banner will come before me, darker than the first.
I will ask:
‘How did you deal with the Book of Allah and my family?’
They will reply:
‘We opposed the Book and scattered your family.’
I will say:
‘Go away from me.’
Then they will return with blackened faces and burning thirst.”
“Then a radiant banner will come before me with a group whose faces shine with light.
I will ask:
‘Who are you?’
They will say:
‘We are the people of tawḥīd and piety from the nation of Muhammad al-Muṣṭafā (s.a.w.a.). We are the remaining people of truth. We acted according to the Book of Allah, loved the descendants of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), supported them, and fought their enemies.’
Then I will say:
‘Glad tidings to you! I am your Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), and you have spoken truthfully. This is how you were in the world.’
Then I will give them water from my Pond. They will depart satisfied and joyful, enter Paradise, and remain there forever.”
“End of the noble narration.” [631]
After this, every condition and state of Imam Husain (a.s.) became a cause of grief and weeping for the Prophet (s.a.w.a.).
Whenever he carried Imam Husain (a.s.) upon his blessed shoulders and the child's head rested upon him, he would remember the head of Imam Husain (a.s.) upon a spear and would weep. [632]
He would say to the Companions:
“It is as though I see the captives riding on camels and the head of my son being carried as a gift to Yazīd.” [633]
Whenever he seated Imam Husain (a.s.) in his lap, he would look at his face and weep. He would say:
“O Ibn ʿAbbās, it is as though I see him with his beard dyed by his own blood, calling for help again and again, yet finding no one to assist him.” [634]
Whenever Imam Husain (a.s.) wore new clothes on the day of Eid, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would weep, [635] as though remembering that one day he would be left unclothed upon the earth.
Whenever Imam Husain (a.s.) sat at the dining cloth with his grandfather, father, mother, and brother and ate food, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would first be happy, then begin to weep. [636]
It was as though he remembered the thirst of Imam Husain (a.s.) and his children, when the world would become dark before their eyes because of intense thirst, when they would be scattered and separated, some being killed and others taken captive.
Whenever he kissed the throat of Imam Husain (a.s.), he would weep. [637]
At times he would say to Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.):
“Hold him for me.”
Then he would kiss every part of Imam Husain (a.s.)'s body and weep.
When asked why he was crying, he would say:
“I am kissing the places where the swords will strike.” [638]
At other times he would kiss his lips and teeth, as though remembering the cane that Yazīd and Ibn Ziyād (may Allah's curse be upon them both) would strike against them.
It is narrated that Zayd ibn Arqam was present before Ibn Ziyād when he witnessed this shameful act. He cried out:
“Remove your stick from these blessed lips! By the One besides whom there is no god, I saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) place his lips upon these very lips and kiss them.” [639]
One day the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) was sitting in the mosque when a group from Quraysh entered, and among them was the accursed Ibn Saʿd.
The color of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) changed and his condition became disturbed.
The Companions asked:
“What has happened to you?”
He replied:
“I remembered what will befall my Ahl al-Bayt: killing, beating, insults, humiliation, displacement, and wandering. The first head to be raised upon a spear will be the head of my son Imam Husain (a.s.).”
