1. The Immortality of the Husaini Movement

In the Ziyārah text transmitted from the Maʿṣūm (a.s.), addressing Imām Husain (a.s.), we read: “I bear witness that your blood has settled in eternity.”

I testify that your blood has become eternal.

The signs of the immortality of the blood of Imām Husain (a.s.) became manifest in the heavens and the earth, among which we mention a few:

1.         Ibn Ḥajar al-Makkī reports in al-Ṣawāʿiq al-Muḥriqah from eyewitnesses that the sky turned red after the killing of Imām Husain (a.s.).

2.         Sibt Ibn al-Jawzī narrates that when Imām Husain (a.s.) was martyred, the sky wept, and its “weeping” was its redness.

3.         Suyūṭī reports that on the day of Imām Husain’s martyrdom, the sun was eclipsed and the order of the universe was disturbed.

4.         Ṭabarī writes that after the martyrdom of Imām Husain (a.s.), for three months from sunrise to several hours after, the sky would appear the color of blood.

5.         Ibn Ḥajar, quoting Ibn Sīrīn, says that before the martyrdom of Imām Husain (a.s.), the reddish glow (shafaq) usually seen at the horizon did not exist.

6.         Abū Nuʿaym narrates that at the time of Imām Husain’s martyrdom, blood rained from the sky, and water vessels were filled with it.

7.         Ibn Ḥajar reports that at that moment the sun was so eclipsed that stars were visible in the middle of the day, and people thought that the Day of Resurrection had arrived.

8.         Maqrīzī reports that after the martyrdom of the Imām, everywhere was plunged into darkness.

9.         Ibn Ḥajar says that on the day of Imām Husain’s martyrdom, they did not lift any stone in Shām without finding fresh blood underneath it.

10.       Maqrīzī reports that on that day in Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), nothing was turned over except that they saw fresh blood beneath it.

11.       Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī says:

“I came before ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān. ʿAbd al-Malik said to those present: ‘Do you know what happened in Bayt al-Maqdis on the night of Husain ibn ʿAlī’s martyrdom?’ No one answered. I said: ‘Something has reached me in this regard.’

They brought me before ʿAbd al-Malik, who asked, ‘Who are you?’ I replied, ‘I am Muḥammad ibn Muslim ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī.’ ʿAbd al-Malik recognized me as “Zuhrī” and said, ‘Tell me what happened on the day Husain ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib was martyred in Bayt al-Maqdis.’”

Zuhrī said: I said: “It has reached me that on that night, no stone was lifted in Bayt al-Maqdis except that fresh blood was seen beneath it.”

12.       Maqrīzī writes:

No one from the army of ʿUmar ibn Saʿd who used the saffron (kept) in the tents of Imām Husain (a.s.) applied it to their face except that their faces were burned.

13.       There was a camel among the camp of Imām Husain (a.s.) which they plundered, slaughtered, and cooked — but its meat turned into bitter colocynth (ḥanẓal).

14.       In the tents of Imām Husain (a.s.), there was some perfume. None of the women from Banī Umayyah who perfumed themselves with it escaped affliction, but they became afflicted with leprosy.

15.       The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) had given some soil of Karbalā to Umm Salamah and said:

“Whenever this soil turns to blood, know that Husain has been martyred.”

Umm Salamah says:

“I placed that soil in a glass container and kept it with me. The day when Imām Husain (a.s.) was martyred, that soil turned to blood.”
